About eighty feet of break- water at White Point was destroyed by the gale.

Qvick Despatca.—Oa Thursday last, the 43th inst., Donald MeKay, Esq., of Oyster Bed Bridge, loaded a schooner of over sixty tons, with potatoes and oats for the Hahi- fax market. During the day a line of carts laden with produce, was formed on the whart until late at night. Nextday the vessel was ready for sea, and Mr, McKay had the satis- faction of seeing his cargo puton board in good order, in the short space of one day. ‘This is, perhaps, the quickest despatch of any vessel on the coast

A Sv. Joun Fatture.—-The Monetary Times says that the failure of so important a firm as thatof I. & ©. Burpee & Co, is the subject of the hour in St. John, N. B. Two young men, withont experience or basiness edacation, we are told, were placed in possession of a splen- did business by their father and uncle, Hon. Isanc Barpee, and have made ‘“‘dacks and drakes” of it. They are short nearly $60,000, which Mr, Isaac Burpee aod his brother, E. R. Burpee, llimake good to the creditore. They are not legally bound to do so, but the former is moraily bound, and, says our in- formant, will not shirk the responsibility, I believe. Extravagance, careless mange- meat, and operatious outside of their busi- hess are the causes of failure.

A Botp Tramp.—On Monday night last a tramp waked into a house near the R. C Cemetery, took eff his boots and socks, hung his coat p, and was walking into the kitchen whea the inmates observed him. He refused

John Lefurgy’s barque Katie Stewart is loading white oats, while that gentle- man’s fine new vessel the Charles E, Le- furgy is taking in black oats.
