The father, Mr. Frank Patter- son, lives on Clarence street, and is in great distress at the loss of his baby, who was oily two years old
Tue exports from this port for the week ending March 16th were, in value, $1,537,- 487. This has never been but once exceed- ed. The larger part of these ($1,292,963) were shipments to England. The aggregate value of exports to date exceeds that for the same period last year by more than $2,000,000. These facts are favorable and encouraging. — Boston Advertizer.
A new Division of the Sons of Temper- ance, called ‘‘Dauntless,. No. 106,” was formally organized at Morell, last evening, by the G. W. Patriarch, with 19 charter members. Mr. James Harty was elected and installed W. P. for the present quarter. The other officers will appear in another is- sue. Weare glad to find the old order of the Sons of Temperance prospering in our midst. We wish “Dauntless” Division a prosperous future.
Severe Cask oF Potsontnc.—Several children playing near Dennis Stream, on Tuesday afternoon, gathered and ate what they supposed te be sarsaparilla root. The root turned out to be very poisonous, and two of the children, Mamie Short and Nellie Townsend, were badly poisoned. The other children were only slightly sick. Dr. Thompson was in attendance, and the chil- dren are now out of danger.—St. Croix Courier.
Globe of yesterday :—‘‘It is safe to say that there is not in the whole Dominion a single public man of any prominence who supported the Mackenzie Administration ii | 1874 but will oppose it in 1878 ; and what is true of prominent public men, is true of the members of the Ministerial Party general- ly.” The fate of the amanuensis who thus unwittingly told the truth is now being de- termined by Mr. Brown. He will probably be condemned for life to occupy apartments in the Neebing Hotel. — Mail.
Ciry Councit.—At the meeting of the City Council, held last evening, D. R. M. Hooper, Esq., was appointed City Assessor, vice William Dodd, ., resigned. The Bell Tower was reported to be at present in an unsafe condition; and a Committee, consisting of Councillors Byrne, Hooper and Heartz, was therefore appointed to inspect it. The building of Pownal Wharf was for some length of time under discus- sion. As the Steam Dredge was to com mence work at it to-day, it was resolved that the manager be instructed to deposit the contents of the scows as far up in the dock as possible. The meeting then ad- journed.
Tue St. John News reports that an early hour on Saturday morning a lady of twenty- seven years, named Matilda O'Neill, was found dead in her bed, at Mrs. Roach’s boarding-house, Jeffrey’s Hill. She went to bed apparently in good health. Miss O'Neill was to cg been married on Satur- day afternoon last, at three o'clock, to a man named Hutchinson, a fireman on the Intercolonial Railway. It is said that Miss O'Neill had a dread of being married, and had frequently intimated her intention of poisoning herself. The people with whom she was staying, thinking that the girl did not mean anything by her silly speeches,

THE SITUATION. (Special Despatch to Examiner. ) Lonpon, April 16.
The Pall Mall Gazette, in a leading edi- torial, says: ‘‘ Whether Prince Bismarck’s proposals succeed or fail, We have no reason to disturb ourselves about the situation. We are strong in the justice of our diplo- matic position, and can afford to wait until our material strengh begins to tell in sup- port of it, by way of a quiet and passive presence. If Russia accedes to our stipula- tions for the Congress, well and good. It will be held, and we shall begin to put our hands to the most arduous piece of inter- national work that has been attempted in Europe since the beginning of the century. If Russia refuses to accede to those terms, there is no necessity for us to declare war against her, and it is in the last degree im- probable that the Government will resort to a declaration of war. It will be sufficient for them to caution their armaments to oc- cupy certain points of territory not neces- sarily provocative of the collision with the Russian forces, and keep Russia in her present position with an unrecognized treaty in her possession, but no other gain from the war but such as she can retain by actual practical possession, at a ruinous cost, and there let her remain until she returns to the sense of her duty to Europe.”

The remark of Lord Derby which gave umbrage in Vienna was, that in conse- quence of a number of Slavs in the Aus- trian army, it could not be trusted to fight against Russia.
According to advices received in Paris from Bucharest, Prince Charles has started to join his army. Constant quarrels occur between Russian and Roumanian officers and men. The Russians have prevented a train laden with ammunition from leaving Bucharest for the Roumanian army.
The entire Roumanian militia have been ealled out.
The Russians have stationed vessels laden with stores ready to again close Suleima at the mcu‘h of the Danube if necessary.

The Good Old Flag.
The Halifax Reporter recommends its young readers particularly to learn the fol- lowing verses, and repeat them on all suit- able occasions. The sentiment that runs through this little song should be endorsed by all Canadians. The words have been set to music, and we think the piece should be- come popular. It should be sung heartily in every Hamlet and mansion in the Do- minion. It was written by the editor of the Canadien Illustrated News, Mr. John Lesperance, a talented French Canadian. The loyalty of our French Canadian fellow- subjects is unquestioned, but such proof of their love for the old flag, at a time when we have a Minister of Militia who has said he would like to see it hauled down, is es- pécially pleasing.
In connection with this we have a sugges- tion to make to this redeubtable Alfred G. It is this : The next time he meets his loyal constituents in public let him appear as a vocalist and favor them with ‘‘Empire First,” His doing so would please many of his friends, and most people would be in- clined, we think, to forgive him his past disloyalty.
