We bave again tothank Mr. Alexander Martia, whose timely thoughtfuloe’s has secured amendments to the bill for con- eolidating and amending the law relating to the election of members of the House of Commons, which will reader the law wore applicable to Prince Edward Island and more intelligible to electora. Mr. Martin’s smendments were all accepted by the House of Commoas. It is now provided that the Clerk of the Crownin Chancery shall, immediately after the issue of the writ o” election, t:anemit to the returning officers in thie province, be- asdeaa eufficient number of votera’ lists and acopy of the electione law, “ one copy of the Franchise Act, 1898.” Besides this, the instructions to returning officers are to include, for Prince Eiward Ieland, “such sections of the Provincial Jaw as relate tothe quilification of voters, and shal! also contain the oaths reqnired to be taken by seciions 65, 66 and 67 of thie Act, bsving made them app'icable tu ‘he Electors io Prince Ejward I-land are also to be notified “re

perance peozle of the province.” The Toronto Guardian has evidently taken ite cue from its Charlottetown namesake, and is therefore not so well infermed upon this point as it ought tu be. The Toronto publication has apparentiv not read the letter of Mr. Johu Anderson, President of ‘he Temperance Alliance, wherein it is pointed out that so far fromthe probibition being absolute the very otj-ctof the bil] has beea defeated by the Government. The Toronto publication is also wrong when it says the bill foes into effect at the expira- tion of the half-year’s license. The half- year’s license expires next December, and the bill does not become law until June. The Alliance wished the prohibitory law they submitted to gointo effect in De- cember;but the Government wanted “blood money” for’ another six months and refused the request. The Charlottetown Guardian, whith is familiar with the'facte, we bave set forth, republishes the Tor- onto Guardian’s statement without a werd of explanation or correction !

Our men discovered tbat there were 350 Mauser rifles and plenty of ammunition stored in a house ia Church Street, and these it was intended to seize the moment there were tidings of the approach from the vorth of an expected force under Colenel Nicholson.
