LIBERAL SHARP PRACTICE.

Mr, Bianchard (Liberal) of Quebec, was recently unseated for currupt practices in his election. Referring to the trial, the Montreal Gazette says:

“Quebec has the strictest election law in Canada, one that, it was thought, would prevent both the bribery of voters and ti e bleeding of candidates that election work~ era so well understand how to manpage. The Vercheres case shows, however, that carefully framed as it was, the Liberal party bad legal advisers eharp enough to get rouod its provisioos. Mr. Blanchard, the Liberal candidate, had money and seems to have been willing to spend it, but the law was in the way. He effected his pur- pose, however, by giving a note for $800, which was discounted and the proceede turped into the general Marchand party fund. Then out of the party fuod what seems to have been the equivalent of the note’s proceeds was sent to the county for the purpose of purifying public life. Hon Mr. Geoffrion, whu seems to have been the adviaer in the thing, has scored over Hon. Mr. Casgrain, who drew up the law.”

She crossed - over and went to work, but the matter came under the notice of the United States offi- cer who looks aiter alien Jabor, ard the Canadian gir! was ordered back home. She Jost her jobin Buffalo, as well as her time aud ber expenses. The city from which ehe was driven is the same where Mr. Blair is having $200,000 worth of care built for the Government of Canada.

Cape Breton seems to have a good thing. It is said, on apparently good authority, thatadircovery has been madeof a big deposit of ore from which specular pig irov, or speigel, is manufactured. Speigel is largely used in the manufacture of Bes» semer steel and is of great value. The Cape Breton deposit is said to be worth as high as $400 per ton. Samples of the ore were sent to Hamburg to be tested, and the re- ports sent back show it to be of the best quality. It is placed by Hamburg exper's at £80 pertov. In convection with th: itis aida plant for the manufaciure«f steel ships will be put in by the Dominion Coal Company.
