The Bioacoustics Research Program, part of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, is continuing its studies of long distance communication between elephants. Research to date has shown that African elephants can perceive long wavelength, low frequency sounds (infrasonic) at distances of at least 2 miles (3.2 km.) Drs. Rene Belland and Wilf Schofield of UBC discovered two new species of flowering plants and a new genus of moss in an upland gorge in Cape Breton Highlands Park. These were the net-veined willow (Salix reticulata), purple saxifrage (Saxifraga oppositfolia), and a moss (orthothecium sgictum). They were found as single plants and will be classified as‘rare or endangered species. This find supports the theory that parts of Cape Breton or the adjacent Scotia shelf were botanical refugia during the Wisconsin glaciation. Two California Condors were released on January 14th in the Sespe Condor Sanctuary in Los Padres National Forest near Los Angeles. These are the only California Condors in the wild. If all goes well, the next condor release will be this fall. (adapted from Birder's World, April, 1992)
