‘Tue election for a Councilman to supply the vacancy in the otlice of Councillor for Ward Four in place of Simon W. Crabbe, Esq., was held to-day. W. W. Stumbles, Jr., Esq., and John P. Tanton, Esq., were the candidates nominated. At half-past four the state of the poll was: Stumbles, 85; Tanton, 51. As the poll will be closed at 5 o’clock, Mr. Stumbles will, no doubt, be elected.
Most of the clergy of the Church of England in the Island, together witha large number of lay delegates, left the Is- land this morning for the Diocesan Synod which meets to-morrow at Halifax. The Synod meets once in every two years, and the ordinary routine of Church business is gore through. The present session is likely to be a lively and interesting one, many of the! questions vexing the Church being thoroughly discussed and ventilated. Each clergyman having a charge is, ex officio, a delegate ; and each parish elects two lay delegates. Among the lay delegates are the Mayor, the Hon. T. Heath Haviland, Messrs. F. Brecken, E. J. Hodgson, W. L. Cotfon, W. C. Harris, W. A. Morson, W. C. DesBrisay, and others. It is gratifying te note-that the country parishes place their comffidence in so many of our townsmen, and.likewise to note that the Island dele- gates are ‘appreciated at the Diocesan Synod. At the last Synod the Minister and both the lay delegates from one of our Is- land parishes were elected by the Diocesan Synod to represent it at the Metropolitan Synod at Montreal.
TH forenoon, George Tiresher appeared before the Stipendiary Magistrate, on com- plaint of Mr. Charles Dalzeil for threatening to take his life. Thresher is a very old man, who is strongly addicted to the use of aleoholic beverages. He appears to be in- aane in point of taking Mr. Dalzeil’s life, fesls sorry that he should do so, but thinks ita duty he has to perform. In 1876 he attempted to shoot Mr. Deiziel. He failed in the attempt, and has since manifested a strong feeling of resentment towards him. Since. then he has repeadedly threatened to execute his rash inten- tion, and often sharpening a carving knife, he wouldswear by his God he would ‘cut his (Delziel’s) guts out.” On Satur- day last, he renewed his threats, and pur- chased a revolver to put them into execu- tion. “He was under the influence of liquor during the day, and while in a saloon on Grafton strect on Saturday night, revealed his intention to young man named McNeill. Mr. Dalziel wasmade aware of the fact, and, onentering his house at 10 o’clock on Sa- turday night, he found Thresher sitting on a bed-in his room. He immediately seized him, took the revolver from his pocket, and gave him in charge of the police. There was several witnesses examined in the mat- ter, after which he was sentenced to one months’ imprisonment.
On Saturday, at 2 p. m., two men named Damien White and Philip Votour were looking after rafts on the Scadouc River, and noticed what they supposed a pine log floating on the water, but a close inspection revealed it to be a human body, which was afterwards} fully identified as that of the missing McCarthy. The news was speedily communicated, and intense excitement pre- vailed; crowds of people rushing to the lace, and telegrams were sent to all points.

Nearly 1,500 persons were arrested at Warsaw as accomplices of the Nihilist secret national Russian Government, which was recently discovered.

A special from Madrid to the Standard says the Government has induced General Martinez Campos to remain in Cuba and direct another campaign against the Cuban insurgents Maceo and Vincente Garcia. The Government have granted him five million pounds for an army reinforcement of 10,000 men, and power to carry out reform.

An explosion on board the Sardinian oc- curred at half-past three this afternoon in the forehold. Forty persons were injured and three killed. Some of the injured were dan- gerously hurt. Attempts to scuttle the ship, at the latest reports, were unsuccessful, Some of the steerage passengers are reported as cut off from all help, but it is believed possible that they will be saved. Four hundred passengers were taken to Londonderry.
