Scuoot Boarp.—A meeeting of the School Board was held last evening, A. Kennedy, Esq.. presiding. The most important part of the business transacted was the change made in the grading of the city schools. Hitherto the work was done by a Grading Master ap- pointed and paid by the Board. In futnre the grading is to be done by the Principals of the Schools, assisted by the Secretary.

Orrawa, May 7.

In the House to-day, Hon Mr. Thomp- son introduced a bill providing that elec- tions in the Northwest be held the same day as in the other Provinces. In answer to Mr. Davies, Sir Charles Tupper said the total amount advanced by the Government to the Harbor Commission in Quebec amounted tu three and a quarter millon dollars. In answer to De. Cameron, Sir H. Lange- vin said the Government could not state positively what they would do in reference to a subsidy to the Inverness & Richmond Railway ; but so far the promoters of the enterprise had failed to show the Govern- ment their ability to carry it out to success- ful completion. The balance of the after- noon was spent in discussing private orders. The militia estimates make provision for the purpose of new ordinance for the Sydney Battery to the amount of $3,000. Pinckney Green, of New York, and Col. Snow and W. B. Ross of Halifax are here respecting Short Line Matters. Norvin Green and Erastus Wiman are expected in Ottawa. Among the private bills passed through Committee of the Whole were McCarthy - Jamieson’s bills amending the Scott

Insurance.

Montreal, May 7. An American insurance expert now in the city returns to New York with a large number of risks. Many of the clients of companies now doing business in the city have, in consequence of the increase in rates, refused to renew their risks and are seeking insurance across the line. One of the largest fire brokers in the

city stated this morning that the situation was serious, and that the business of his and other companies was being largely inter- fered with in consequence of the removal of their insurance. The companies had all along been opposed to increasing their rates but were forced to do so for theiv own pro- tection, and to compel the city to improve its fire brigade.

Collision of Steamers. ; Norroik, Va., May 7. The British steamer Benson, from Matanzas for Philadelphia, was in collision yesterday about noon, during a dense fog, with the steamer Eureka, 168 miles south- east of Cape Henlopen. When the fog lifted, have an hour afterward, the Eureka was nowhere to be seen. It is feared that she sank after the collision. There was a sound of escaping steam and one whistle. The Benson's bow was badly stove in. She would have sunk but for her watertight compartment. The Eureka was a freight boat. The officers and crew numbered 33. a

Sir James Ferguson, Under Foreign Secretary stated in the Commons to-day that no unofticial communication had passed between the Government and the Pope in reference to the letters pescript condemn- ing boycotting and the plan of campaign in Ireland. He also stated that the Govern- ment has not brought to bear any influence to bring about the issue ot rescript.

Lansdowne and Canadian Art.

Toronto, May 7.

Lord and Lidy Lansdowne were tender- ed a public reception this evening in the Pavillion Music Hall. Mayor Ciarke read a civic address of farewell to which His Excel- lency replied at some length. To-night His Exceliency formally opened the annual exhibition of the Royal Canadian Academy of Artists.

In view of the attitude of leaders of the National League, the Pope has instructed Cardinal Simeoni to dictate Mgr. Persico to obtain from the lrish Bishops, without delay, a declaration of their views — the rescript. The observations of the Bishops will be submitted to a congregation of the Propaganda.

A Grit Elected.

Orrawa, May 7.

Edwards (Grit) was elected in Russell by a majority of over 200. The French dis- trict of Clarence, in which Edwards lives and does business, gave him 500 majority, 50 more than at the general election. In the other districts of the county the vote stood about the same as at the general election.
