These prospects. both in Eastern: and Western Canada, have been €ll-. harmed as a result of the suspicion aroused by the jumbled Dunning budget. It is generally anticipated ‘from reliable predictions throughout. the length and breadth of Canada that Hon. R. B. Bennett will be re- turned to power with a majority over ail. Four New York publishing com- panies have touched off a revolution in the book business by announcing their intention to cut the price of their books from $2.00 and $2.50 to $1.00 per volume. Three of the com- panies confine their reductions to works of fiction. but the fourth com- pany, "will extend the price-cutting beyond the lines of fiction to his- tories, biographies, works of science and exploration. and the like." Longer works, priced now from $3.00 to $10.00. also will be reduced with- out change in make-up. The object is to counteract what the innovating publishing firms describe as "an alarming condition in the book iii- dustry" by making the one-dollar volume the unit of publication in the business. instead of the $2.00 and $2.50 book. which has been the unit for" some time. As might be expect- ed, the proposal has brought out a full supply of comment from the publishing trade. much of it hesitant. and a good deal of it openly 110m" to the idea of cheaper books.
