The new National line steamer’s first voyage, says the New York Herald, in which she madethe run from (Qucens- tow harbor to Sandy Hook in a little less than six days and sixteen hoars, is remarkable for a maiden effort. The greatest number of miles traveled in One day is reported to be four hundred and seventy-seven, or an average of pearly twenty miles an hour for the whole day, Considering that this time was made on an initial voyage, when the steamer’s machinery cannot work with entire smoothness, it scems not improbable that she will make the same run with favorable winds in six daya. The attainment of such speed on the ocean in vessels built as solidly as the American and carefully navigated may be made contributory to satisfy. For a steamer capable of making twenty miles an hour may outrun most of the great Atlantic cyclones and thus save her machinery from the intense strain to which it is subjected in aheavy gale. The fast steamers, if properly handled, should be the safest.
