Eng- land has lost nothing in Chiva which ought to have been kept. The policy of an open door is intact. Capture of Shendy on the Nile,
Dervishes Cut Of From Their Base of pupply.
Cairo, March 30.—Shendy, on the Nile, was taken by surprise. A gunboat witha battalion of ‘Egyptians on board’ascended the Nile fromthe mcuth of the Atlara river and arrived at Shendy by dawn on Saturdsy. The gunboat shelled the forts and then a battalion was lJanaded and at- tacked the town. The capture of Shendy was a brilliant manoeuvre as the main body of the Dervishes who had advanced against the Anglo~Egvptian forces from Shendy is now cut off from its base of supply and its reserve depot is destroyed.

government supporters in the progress of affairs in the far east, is becoming more acute. Unless it is found that the government has secured some tangible ad- van‘age, riot will eet in among its suppor- ters. It is reported, however, from the best quarters that the best apparent diplo~ matic defeat of Great Britain makes a move of great importance, which will give Great Britain a favorable position.”

The coal is of excellent quality for stepm or heating purposes and isso hard that some competent judges pronounce it equal to fairly good anthracite. The mine is within a few miles of the I. C.R. The average output wi] be from 10 to 20 tons per diem.
