The names and dates have been withheld, but the story is vouched for. und is a remarkable instance of what woman will do for love, and the ravenge she will take on those who thwart it. ‘The peculiar sanctity held by his followers to attach to a Maori chief is well known ; and the fact that he can taboo (a total prohibition of intercourse with) or make sacred anything he touches, has also been told usin a dozen volumes. It so haps pened that a Rangatira chief fell in love with a handsome girl of his people, who loved an humbler admirer.

But now comes the dramatic climax of the episode. The girl waits, and does nothing desperate so long as there is yet a chance for the lover whose love she res turned. But no sooner has he sullenly retired from the struggle, hopeless and broken hearted, then she resolves io the hedious revenge. To kill the chief would have been of little use, for she would have beeu tabooed still, and no man would have dared to marry her. But she can at least inflict a life-long revenge upon the chief who had taken her from her lover, and this she proceeded to accomplish in a hor, ribly ingenious way.
Stealing away one night from her lodge, she made her way to che hut of a leprous hag, living shunned by the tribe, on the outskirts of the village. We are told that she not only stayed with the deceased woman fora time, but to ensure still more certainty of her revenge, drank the old hag’s blood. Need we add that when she returned to her lord and master, it was not as the handsome girl she set out, but as a loathsome leper, to be a lifelong bur- den and curse, and an object of disgust to him.
Such is the story, which, for the ter- rible intensity of the passion for revenge, shown by the heroine, has probably beeo rarely surpassed. One can better under- stand, after reading it, how it was the last war in New Zealand was such a hotly contested one. No wonder the Maoris fought to the bitter end, if even their women possesses the determination shown by this dark-skinned beauty.
