“That whilst the Memorialists desire most thankfully to_ acknowledge the fiivouralile grant which the Legislature of Nova Scotia has been pleased to make to the Proprietors of the St. George,for the ensuing season, they are constrained, by the absence ofull notice or information of the intentions ofthe Legislature ofNova Scotia,rwith respect to that partzof their Memorial of February lust which adverted to the ser- vices performed by the St. George during the last year, again to solicit attention to the following representation :

“That the St. George commenced her operations for the season on the 18th of August, 1842, and continued to run weekly between Pictott atid Miramichi—and as ofteti as the weather and other circumstances would admit, touching at Pictou twice in the week—until the end of the month of November. That ’the St. George was employed in this service at a‘very great expense to the Proprietors, iii the

’ expectation that this Company would be entitled thereby to ~ like remuneration profl'ered by the Legislature of'Nora Scot in for such services. ' ‘

Miramiclii, and other alterations not yet determined upon, the coming venr will result in a more satisfactory report from the Treasurer than he is able to present to you upon the present occasion. . .

Discouraging as tltis statement, With respect to pecuniary matters, must be allowed to be, and disappomtingto our rea- sonable expectations, tliereis, iieverlh_lcss,onenlpiost redeem- ing consolation iii the assurance that the public is derivmg, and We hope will contine to derive, incalculable advantages from the existence of this Company; and from the regular and rommodioiis communication it has established, by means ofits vessel, with the neighbouring Provinces, and through one ofthetu, with England. . - . Excluded by her insular posttion from becoming the ordinary route ofvisitors to these comparatively unexplored countries, the very existence of Prince Edward Island. might become a problem, if she failed to assert her claim to coast- (Iel‘ntlon, by making this one strenuous effort to maintain it station in the general estimation. -

The great extent of unimproved land of the best character for Agricultural euterprizc ; the great facilities of water com- "indication, and other advantages, which this neglected Island is acknowledged to possess, needs but to be made known, to secure to her that attention which is so necessary to heradvancement; and one oftho requisite instruments for attracting and facilitating that attentive observation amt opportunity for examination, by which the advantages and peculiarities of'tlie Island may be made known, is it Steam: bout ofsuch power and accommodationas may offer a safe and pleasant means of transport to visiters and travellers of all desoriptious. .

You Will, perhaps, recollect that at the close of our last year’s Report we pointed out the great advantages that might be expected to accrue to these I’rovutces, ifp. steam conittiiiiiication could be extended along the Gulf shores, and oti to Halifax. You are most likely informed that it is contemplated, in the coming season, Ito run a Steamer be- tween Newfoundland aud I‘Iltlllllx, touching at some port in Cape Breton. By running the St. George alternate weeks to Miraniichi and to Ship Harbour, iii Cape Breton, one very important part of the extensive communications yve‘then glanced at would be accotiiplislied,-thereby establishing a regular comitiuiiicatinti by Steumhoats with both Halifax and Newfoundland ; and there is little doubt that the belie- fitto this community, and to the other Provinces, would be ex‘tenstvely felt. But with the limited riieans we are at pre- sent possessed of, and the insufficient encouragemept hitherto experienced, the Directors felt that it would beJmprudent to involve the Company in any new enterprize, WIthout first ascertaining what additional aid might be obtained; and as they weri: informed that the Imperial Government had giveiilarge assistance to the Steamboat which is about to be employed between Halifax and Newfoundland, and as the St. George has been and is proposed to be em- ployed iii perfecting the Mail Post communications between the Mother country and some oftbe principaltowns and places in these Provinces, besides the conveying of the Provmcial Mails, they determined to Memorialize the Impe- I‘inl Government for such assistance as the Lords Commis- sioners of Her Majesty’s Treasury should be graciously pleased to grant; and they are happy to inform you, that, upqn communicating with His Excellency Sir H. V. Hunt- ley upon the subject, His Excellency, With that readiness which he always displays whenever occasion offers for pro- moting the interests ofthis community, very kindly under- took to transmit our Memorial, with a strong recommendav tinn ofits prayer, to the proper authorities.

This Memorial Went to England by the-last Mail, and un- til an answer is received, final arrangements cannot be de: termined upoti. It Will be the business ofthe new Board of Directors—so soon as this is received—~to resolve upon the future occupation ol‘tlie St. George, and to obtain the appro-

. SUMMARY OF flFFIDflVIT.

Wm..Brooke‘, Messenger, of2, Union-street, Soutbwark, Lon- don, maketh oath and saith, that be (this depnnent) was afflicted with FIFTEEN RUNNING ULCERS on his left arm, and ul- cerated sores and,wounds on both legs, for which dcponept was admitted an out-door patient at the Metropolitan Hospital, in April, 1841, where he continued for nearly four weeks. .Unable to receive a cure there, the doponent sought relief at the three allowing hospitals :—-King's College Hospital in May, for ‘five weeks ;—'tt Guy’s Hospital in July, for ‘six wecltsg-and at Lha- ting Cross Hospital at the end of August, for some weeks more ;, which deponent left, being in a far worsecondition than when he qiiitted Guy’s, where Sir BRANSBY COOPER. and other medl- 'ciil officers of the establishment had told depunent that the only chance of saving his life was to LOSE HIS flRlIl.’ The depo- nent thereupon called upon Dr. BRIGHT, chief phystcian of Guy’s, who, on viewing the deponent's condition, kindly and liberally said, “ lam utterly at a loss what to do for you! but here is halfla-savcrcign : go to .Mr. HOLLOWfl Y, and tr whftt effect his Pills and Ointment will have, as I have frequent y wit- nesserl the wondeigful chtls they have in desperate cases. Yoecan let me see you again.” This unprejndiced advice was follo wed by the deponent, and a perfect cure efecled in three weeks, by the use alone of HOLLOWAY’S PILLS and OINTMENT, after four Hospitals had failed!!! \Vlien Dr. Bright was shown by the dcpouent the result of his advice and charity, he said,“ I am both astounded and delighted, for I thought thattf I war saw you again alive, it would be without your arm; I can only compare

enable tne to comply with the prayer of'thc‘ Petition.

Island.” The Metnorials presented to our own Legislature received ‘ that conisderate and enlightened attention which has dis- tinguished all its proceedings with respect to this public en- terprize, aitd the private Shareholders are, by its liberal dis- position, placed iti circumstances of increased advantage, whenever the swelling tide of' Commercial prosperity shall revisit these Provinces.

Having, during the Winter season, effected such neces- sary repairs and alterations as the experience of the previous Summer had shown to be requisite to the enerul accom- modation of passengers, and conducive to lie efficiency of the vessel—alterations which successfully accomplished the purposes ‘and objects for which they were undertaken ; and as the Directors feel assured that the prevailing desire is to render the St. George as actively serviceable to the public as is compatible with lier.safety, they feltlt incumbent oti them to bring‘her into. operation as soon as the state of'tlie ice and the general aspect. of the weather permitted. Disre— garding, therefore. the mere-requirements of the Acts of the several Legislatures, the St. George was dispatched on her first voyage to Pictou on the 27th oprril, and to Miramichi on the 5th of May. .

It has been a source ofmucli satisfaction to the Directors that the St. George was able to perfortti her appointed voy- Jages during the last season with so much regularity, not- withstanding'some very unexpected interruptions that are not likely, we trust, to occitr again.

It would be a still greater subject ofcongratulation, ifthey could, with equal trutb,_state to yeti that the returns of‘tlie past yearofl'ered an adequate remuneration for the services performed and the risk and anxiety incurred ; bttt they are obliged, howeverunwillingly, to inform you, that ifallthe

'grants and sums of money which the Company lays claim _ to were fully paid up, after making the necessary payments to the eserved and Insurance funds, there would be no balance applicable to the payment ofa dividend to the Shareholders. The. Directors, however, trust that the re- presentations which they have made, and will continue'to make, as oppOrtiinity occurs, will induce, on the part of the several Legislatures, a more liberal consideration of the claims of this Company, and that, by new arrangements,

The Chairman then informed the meeting that the gen- tlemen retiring from the Direction were Andrew Duncan, Esq., Capt. Swabey, and Francis Lougworth, Esq., M. P. P.

The meeting then proceeded to elect three persons to fill the vacant offices.

The Scrutineers, upon examination oftheballotiug papers, reported that Capt. Swabcy, Francis Lotigworth Esq. atid Andrew Duncan, Esq. were re-elected to the Direction of the Company. .
