“ Preroria, August 7.—Delarey, hear- ing of Ian Hamilton’s approach towards Rustenburg, and seeing that he had no chance of capturing Baden-~Powell, hur-~ ried off to Elands River. Hamilton re- ported that firing in Elands River ceased yesterday and that Lieut.-Colonel Hoar and the garrison had evidently been capy tured.

The expedition moved slowly decause it was found thet the Chinese had placed mines and torpedoes in the .Pei river The Japanese in the advance soon struck ® force of the enemy near Tien Tsin and @ skirmish followed. The Chinese fought welland the Japanese suffered # loss of twelve men. The Chinese then retired upon Pei Tsang. Scouts reported three large guns and many smaHer c8nn0n were in place in the Chinese trenches at Pei Tsang, A spy, who had One out in advance of tbe allies, brought in the information that the Chin- ese forces consisted of fully 40,000 met, well armed and strongly entrenched, The American and British troops marched up the west bank ofthe river. The Russians and Japanese moved along the east banks, Light draught transport boat, with sup~ [ plies and artillery, moved slowly up the river between thecolumns. The weather was ideal and the troops were in good con: dition and high fighting epirite. Pei Teang wae reached Saturday and theallies took position for bat'le during the night. The attack wae made Sunday a: daylight, The resistance of the Chinese were most stubborn, For seven hours the result of the battie was in doubt, Then the allied troops rushed the Chinese position and the Mongoliane were driven from their treoches.
