The Modus Vivendi Diseussed
Ortawa, May 4.
Phe discussion in the Senate continues on the renewal of the Atlantic modus vivendi. Senator Power thought (Canada had too long carried out the Scriptural injunction ot turning the other cheek to the Yankees to be smitten. The treatment of our Vessela in Behring Sea should be a pointer for us. The Gov- ernment, in his opinion, was quite justitied in abolishing the Atlantic modus. Premier Abbott said that not long ago the Opposi- tion denounced the Government becsuse there was no modus with the States. Now Mr. Power was complaining because the Government by this measure was simply endeavoring to keep peace. Canada deriv- ed many advantages from the modus vivendi, but he was not justified in saying what these advantages were. This was one method for preserving harmony with our nerghbors and it was better for Canada to adopt a measure of this kind than friction to be continually arising. The bill only passed its second reading.

organized. Roome, M. P., was elected President, and Weldon Vice-President for New Brunawick ; Borden, for Nova Scotia, and Howlan for P. EB. Island. In the Commons nothing of importance was done of Supply for discussing the canal esti- mates.

Lonpom, May 4. Telegrams from the British West Africa Colony of Gambia received at the War Office, say thata British force consisting of 50 marines and 300 troops has captured Toniataba after a spirited defence. Gupt. Roberts, of the Ist West India regiment was wounded

Quebec—Fair catches of lobsters and few herriag at Perce, Grand River and New Port Point to-day.
P. KE. Island—Herring and lobsters re ported very plentiful at Miminigash and a few taken on banka. Magdalen Islands—Herrin at Amberst Island, and le Grandentry.
Cape Breton—Good estehes of lobsters are being made at Port Hood, Louisburg and Avichat, and herring fair at Port Hood, Stanns and St. Peters. A few cod are being taken at Arichat and reported fair in Bras D'or Lake.
Nova Scotia—Lobsters good at Port Med. way and fair at Whithead, Isaac's Harbor Liverpool and Gaspereaux reported stocking in Live l and at Digby. ‘Good catches of cod and halibut are being made; also, a few herring and haddock biit.
Herring bait by fishermen’s net at George- town, P. E. 1, and St. Ann’s. Ice pro- curable at Georgetown, Arichat, Whitehead and Liverpool.
