Without elaborating the many strong points in favor of hill plowing, a. few of the more prominent benefits may be briefly stated as follows:

.1. August and September is a good time to turn over bound out and land and manure and re-seed it at once to gnu, obtaining acrop of buy the fol- lowing year.

2. October and November is an excel— dent time to break up sod land for plant- rirg the following sprin".

3. The weather is then cool and brac- ning and the team strong and hearty for .work; while the weather in spring is ‘more relaxing and the tram less able;

and spring being always hurring, it saves .time to despatch us much of tho plowing «as possible during the previous autumn.

4. Sodlanll broken up late in autumn \will be quite free from growing grass .the following spring, the roots of the late

overturned sward being so generally kil-

led by. the immediately succeeding winter whatnot much grass will rcadly start in sapling.

5. The frosts of winter disintegrate the plowed land, so that it readily crum- bles in fine particles in spring, and a deep,,mellow seed-bed is casilly made. The chemical changes and modifications resulting from atmospheric action during

winter, develops latent fertility in the upturned furrows, which, with the nellowing influences, materially inerca~ ales the crops.

6. Most kinds of insects are either "wholly destroyed or their (leprcdations materially checked Ly late fall plowing.

7. Corn stubble land may be plowed late in fall, and thus be all rcadyfor very early sowing in spring, thereby going far to insure a good catch of grlfis; the roots of the new seeding hold well, on being well estu blishcd bcforcthc droughts

8. Most land in this country needs . Kleeper plowing than has generally been , practised. When the sub-soil is fine grained, unctuoua-and close, or wheer ‘. than in a tun-.1 ‘10.!- -I.' 3-..:- ~1--“')a aw , plowing may at once be resorted to, with ' decided advantage. \thrc the sub-soil is poorer, the plowing may still be ad- vantageously deepened by degrees, say an inch at each new breaking up. But in by far a majority of cases, deep plowing may be practiced at once—in-dcep, it it may be the rule, with safety, while shallow plowing may be the exception. Blow say 9, 10, 11, or 12 inches in November. The sub-soil turned up will ,grosv several shades darker by spl‘in". Ill.‘he frosts and atmospheric influences of winter will mellow the soil, the inorganic elements and all latent fertility will bc made more active for benciilting the crops. In soring, spread the manure and plow it in, or otherwise Work it in or mingle it with the soil, to the depth of [our inches, or a lilllc more or less, and you have the very best attainable 00“- dition for realizing good crops. Deeper plowing may thus be practiced t'lan would at all times be safe, or expedient if the plowing is delayed till spring.

Such. improvements pay not only in the satisfaction of having things look (well, but in money. How often is the remark made, and how true is it, that :time is money, and yet we fear the farm- ;er does not always realize it. The family ,my for years go twenty or thirty rod:l “or more to a springer well, when for a I«mall outlay of labor, with some cash. the water could be brought into the house, :where it would be so handy and save so :eteps and so much valuable time and strength. One quarter part of the time :spcnt in going after water during the 1 ast years, would more than pay for the l'improvemcnt. So of drains in the mend- cw; foryears the bay has been poled 011‘ ,st considerable cost for labor, the land being so wet that a horse would not go pl: to it, when a few days' labor spent in .draini'lg and improving the land would at it in such condition as to save the lbor of poling the hay. How many itimes have the cows got through the ence, when a few days‘ labor would so mprove it that all such vcxation would be saved. On many farms were stones lore plenty we see wooden fences put .where a little more labor would have put a fence that would last a life-time. Vinny a field that is now too rough for the owing machine could by digging and gloating out the rocks be permanently improved and made smooth, so that the great labor-saving machine could be 'fi‘ecly used. Bushes and weeds infest the corners of fences and get in about the rocks and become a nuisance when by a few duys’ labor they could be entire- ly eradicated. These and many others things will suggest themselves to the ob- serving farmer, and he will if he is inter- ested in his work take hold and make these improvements just as fast and as far as his time will permit.
