The sponsors must have known that it would receive scant attention, since no parliamentary maJ'0l'll.V l5 80in; to.vote the Government out of office that way. It is not likely that the proposal would have met with ap- proval if it had been brought for- ward in the normal course of parlia- mentary business: for the present Government has emphasized on sev- eral occasions the belief that the Liberal Party has a monopoly 01 good ideas in all fields. Nevertheless, presented in that way it would have , looked more like a genuine proposal for the improvement of the Canadian economy especially in Western Can- ada and the Maritimes. As it was, it was easy for the parliamentary majority to regard it as a somewhat feeble attempt to embarrass the Government. On its merits, the recommenda- tion would appear to be sound and certainly an improvement over many of the hazy sections of the Gordon economic report. There is no ques- tion of the importance of developing secondary industries, of encouraging more Canadian participation in en- terprises which at the present time are inonopolized by American inter- ests and of inquiring into ways and means of correcting this country's trade imbalance. These, of course, are matters which should be and probably are the concern of Govern- ment; but much more could be done than has yet been attempted, and perhaps some such policy as Mr. Dlefenbaker and Mr. Low had in mind would, if given the support of nlliparties, help to put vigor in pro- grams already under way and in- stitute new ones from time to time. It must be clear to all that Canada carinot realize its potential economic greatness so long as its raw ma- terials are regarded mainly as feed for foreign and foreign-dominated industry. '

When Rules Are Broken

year's debate, notes the Winnipeg Free Press sadly, are now winging home to roost. Although the present session of Parliament is barely a month old, tempers in the House of Commons are already frayed. The Opposition has been making more than usual use of the question period to harass the Government, and Min- isfers have not concealed that they find. this ing. The Speaker has had some difficulty in controlling the House, and the Prime Minister has gone so far as to indicate that he thought the Speaker permitted too much supplementary questioning and discussion.

The most bitter flare-up so far occurred when J. C. Van Home, a Conservative M.P. from New Bruns- wick, defied the Speaker and refused to take back some of the things he had said about the Minister of Labor. The scene inevitably recalled the tumultuous days, last summer when the pipeline bill was being debated. Indeed, the situation is in part I

ticism sharper, than in an ordinary session. It will not take much to set . things off again.

"One can, to a degree, sympathize with the speaker in his present posi- tion." comments our Winnipeg con- temporary. But his appeal to mem- bers .to observe the rules for the good of all of us and, I suppose, for the good of Parliament' may seem to the Opposition to be a trifle be- lated. The Government showed prec- ious little concern for the good of Parliament last June. If the Opposi- tion is not responsive now to the Speaker's pleas. the Government is not entitled to complain."

Long-Livecl Neiherlanclers

It has been announced that the Netherlanders are still ahead of all other nationalities in longevity, a position they have held for a good many years now. This is so, the re- port says, despite the fact that the country has more than its statistical share of overweight people and that most Neiherlanders keep on work- ing as long as they are able without thought of retiring on pensions or taking things easy after they pass middle age. Moreover, they use fewer pills, sedatives, synthetic tonics and the like than any other civilized people on earth. As for the recently arrived "tranquilisers" which are supposed to keep people happy and contented under all conditions, they are virtually unkown. "Hard work and plenty of good food" is the recipe, according to those who were interviewed in the course of the sur- vey.

Somehow, it is good to hear this bright bit of news from this bright country. It is certainly a welcome diversion from pondering on the' sad statement made the other day by a distinguished American psychologist to the effect that urban United States is being kept alive by seda- tives, peace-of-mind prescriptions, coddling of the heart and fear of overwork. And if that be true, or only partially true, of urban United States, urban Canada, too, is in jeopardy. ' -

We need all the aids which medi- cal science, as distinct from quasi- psychoioglcal pretensions, is able to prescribe for our well-being; but hard work and plenty of good food, even though some of it may be a little fattening, are still our very good allies. '

After a few years, he sold it and in 1917, he bought the 90,000 acre. Tony Day ranch, south of Medi- cine Hat. Day had suffered se- vere set-back in the winter of 1906- 07, when most of his huge herd of "Turkey Triack' cattle perished, Now he was building up a bank of range horses on his "0 Ranch," north of Wlldhorse. But Day's ranch was for sale and Mr. Bow- len has told that in buying it. the regotlations lasted exactly five minutes. Five cents an acre was the price on the leased land and

Generally, though, about the best way of relieving childhood attacks of migraine is by the sim- ple use of acetlsaiicylic acid.

Sounds like pretty potent stuff. doc.-n'. it? Actually you've prob- ably got a lot of it in your home this very minute. Acetysnlicylic acid .is a fancy name for plain aspirin.

Aspirin should be given early in the attack. If the child already has started vomiting. you can get supposhories containing acetylsal- icylic acid.

In severe cases, your doctor might also recommend rectal sup- positories of a cnmblnati of car- feine and ergotamine lartrafa.

If the youngster has any trouble with his eyes. ears, none or throat. these of course should be cor- rected.

PARENTAL PRESSURE

There's something else you par- ents can do. too. If your child has migraine headaches you may be exerting too much parental pres- sure on him. Frequently. this is the case, Don't be too demanding in his school work.

And don't above all, insist that he carry on a full schedule of ac- tivitlea such as music lessons and the like outside of school if he suf- fers from migraine. After all a child can only do so much. QUESTION AND ANSWER
