For this purpose he had held a meeting of the Island clergy and instructed them in the matter. He requested the co- operation of every member of the congrega- tion.
A meeting was held last evening in con- nection with the St. Patrick’s Sogiety. A branch of the Diocesan Society was formed with about one hundred and fifty members. lt will be organized at a meeting to bo held this evening in St. Patrick’s Hall. All friends of the movement are requested to at- tend.

Toe Halifax Herald’s article on finance and commerce says: ‘‘In the United States the markets for our exports are fair. The better grades of apples about hold their own at from $3.25 to $3.50. Good brands of mackerel are wanted at high prices. Dry fish is in light supply, with a firm feeling. Labrador herring are quoted at $575 to $5.80. Provincial coals are marked ip New York at 5 perton. Cod oil ranges from 53 to 55 cents for Ameri- cin, and 60 cents for best English. Pota. toes hold the market well in hand, receipts not overruling the demand, and prices keeping well up to paying figures. Early Rose are quoted at $1.50 to $1.75; other grades from $1.25 to $1.50”’

Callaghan; but last even- ing the Chief of Police stated that the mother had sat on the child until life had become extinct. If the other rumors re- garding the manner in which the child came to its death have any foundation in fact, immediate steps should be taken for an enquiry into ihe matter. There were no marks of violence to be observed on the body of the child at, the time of its burial. Sergeant Hayes is endeavoring to ascertain the facts of the case.— Sl. John News.

ENCOURAGEMENT TO Manuracrures.—The Halifax Herald thinks the resolution pass« ed by the City Council, of that city, on the subject of giving encouragement to new manufactures, isa move in the right di- rection, The remission of taxes and rates for a term of years is a small boon, but in very many cases it is the extra taxation that keeps some manufacturers from com. ing to the city. Some months ago the Herald raade @ proposal which would now fit into the subject of encouragement to small manufacturers. This was to erect double rows of workshops in some of the upper street blocks, to be run by power supplied from one steam engine, which could be so located as to be connected with belting and shafting Wood turners, brass finishers, boot and shoe makers, nail and tack cutters, workers in wood and metals and various other light industries, could be furnished with motive power at low cost.
A Day’s Dornes 1n Yarmovurtu, N, S.— Friday, 16th inst., was fruitful of iocal ‘‘evyents:’’’ Tho steamer “ Edgar Stuart” took fire in the oil room at 64.4. m.- Bells rang an alarm, and the engines were stirt+ ed, but the fire was extinguished by a fire extinguisher on board without serious in- jury being done.—A colored lad, recently trom the Penitentiary, broke into a store at Milton, was detected ‘n the act, pur, sued, captured, tried and sentenced by the Stipendiary Magistrate to six months’ of jail life with hard labor.—A colored man stabbed a Frenchman with a pocket knife, on Clements’ Wharf, for which he was sentenced to three months in jail, and the Frenchman, in consideration of the provo~ cation he gave, got a sharp and well-de. served ‘reprimand from the Magistrate, and was mulcted in costs of trial.--Two professional gentlemen had a fracas in one of the public offices, resulting in a trial be~ fore the Stipendiary and a fine of $20 im- posed on one of them, with costs.—A young girl made an attempt to commit suicide, but without success; the matter has been kept quiet, and ‘‘mum’’ is the word.—There was a sudden death of a married laily, and there were two funerals. — Yarmouth Herald,

A dispatch from Vienna says that so far from being weakened, the Czarowitch’s army now consists of eight infantry and four cav- alry divisions, numbering from 80,000 to 90,000 men, and thought it must overline from the Danube to the vicinity of Tirnova. It will not be easy for the Turks to make much impression upon it, since the Russians, by forced marches, can concentrate three or four divisions on any given point in a single day.
A Cettinge dispatch says the wounded Montenegrins arriving report that on Sun- day night divisions of Pianenaz moving to- ward Scutari found the Turkish forces en- trenched near Anomalite, behind three lines of breastworks extending from the hiils to Boyana. Assauit was made by 600 volun- teers, who carried the first two lines; but on attacking the third found themselves op- posed to a much superior force cf Turks, and were beaten back with a loss of between 320 or 30 killed and 100 wounded, when the at- tack was abandoned. ‘This affair shows that the statement that the right bank of the river was entirely in the possession of the Montenegrins is unfounded. fhe locality of the battle was about half way between Anpvar and Scutari. Ali Saib previously reported from Scutari that 4,000 Montene- grins hed attacked the position de: ‘ending the road from Antivari to Scutari, and were repulsed, losing 300 men.
The Times correspondent says: /** The movement appears most njudicious and use- less. Since after the opportunity of taking Scutari by surprise has heen lest, it was practically impregnable, and any aggressive movement in that direction was objectless, while any Turkish movement for relief of Antivori with their present force could eastiy have been beaten.
