Sixth Annual Maritime Gideon Rally Opgs

The Bible as the voice of God was the subject of an inspir- aiional address by Dr. Arthur C. Vincent, pastor of the Main Street Baptist Church in Saint John, last evening at the open- ing of the sixth annual Maritime

Halifax and Sussex as well as the Island members along with many interested friends assembled at Heart: Hall, Trinity United Church. From there'tha centre of activity moves today to the Charlottetown Hotel for the re- mainder of the Rally.

Opening his address, Dr. Vin- cent recalled haillly incidents in his ministry in Charlottetown some seventeen years ago when he was pastor at the Baptist Church here. One such experience was his participation in a ser- vice of dedicating the Gideon Bibles just placed in the then brand new Charlottetown Hotel.

The Bible is the book among books. Dr. Vincent stated. It is the Living Word, eternal, speak- ing today In over a thousand languages to people in their mo- ther tongue.

He spoke of the Bible as being written by many men from many walks of life, yet unified in thought, authored by God alone. He encouraged Gldeona in their work of spreading the gospel as he reminded them of its effect on men whose lives it touched.

The speaker was introduced by W. J. McAlary of Sussex. W. B. Wortman, Canadian Gideon Pre- sident, was chairman for the eve- ning. Members and friends were welcomed in a few words from the Charlottetown President, R. J. Rupert. During the evening Roy Smallman sang a solo "The Stranger of Galilee. Trevor Nell was song leader and Mrs. J. D. Davlson planist.' I

At a meeting of the street Com- mittee yesteraay afternoon, Inspec- tor Hewitt and City Engineer Mes- servey submitted a progreu report covering the work done by the City plant thus far, with a forecast for the immediate future, ouibject to working conditions.

Calf Judging

The morning was entirely taken up with the judging of,the calves shown by the various Calf Clubs. A very large entry list from I4 clubs faced the judges in. the Hol- stein class. First place was won by the Millcove Calf Club with Wilfred Stewart, Guy Thompson and Marie Mclntyre showing the animals.

In second spot was the Tryon Club of John Thompson, Deane Johnson and Ronnie Johnson. Third place went to the Norboro Club with Adele Jardine, Douglas Jardine and James Paynter. The calf shown by Miss Jardina was named reserve champion by the official judges while that of Wil- fred Stewart was given the chem- pionship. Other clubs in the or- der of placement were Malpeque, Freetown, Montrose-Alma, Alexan- dra, Northam, Bedeque, Rustlco, Miscouche, Sherbrooke, Johnston's River and Gowan Brae.

Second spot. was taken by Milton with James Mallard, Martha Leslie and Gor- don Leslie leading the animals. ' The champion Ayrshire was shown by Melvin Bernard, St. Phillip, with the reserve cham- pionship going to Zeta McGaugh, Belle River. Other Ayrshire Clubs taking part were from St. Geor- ges. Bear River, St. Charles and Cardigan North.

There were only two teams en- tered in the Jersey class, with top honors going to the Wlltshire team of Joyce Easter, Gordon MacMlllan and Stewart Vicker- son. The second team was from Bedeque with Norma Stetson, Cot- tie Toombs and Arnold Lord: Miss Joyce Easter had the champion "Cresthlll Gloria", while the re- serve championshlp was awarded to the calf of Gordon Ma cMillan, Cornwall.

In the Fox Pavillion used by the Women's Institute there was an excellent display of work of the various clubs of the Province. The needlework section alone was one of the best displays seen in a. long time. It was not judged, being there for display only.
