Planets 1n November.

Saturn is evening star and though a lesser light than the glowing Jupiter, surpasses him in interest during the mosth. He has passed his opposition er nearest point to the earth, but is still travelling toward his perhelion or near est point to the sun, which he will net reach till 1884. Therefore he will ap- pear brighter than he did this year at the next oppesition of 1881, and still brightor at each sucece jing one till 1554, whea we will be a hundred million miles nearer the sun than at his most distant point, and put on his most glo rious phase. The rings will continue to epen uatil 1885, when they reach their widest extent, and the planet will also reach the point of greatest northern declination within the same period. The years 1881-1885 are the golden season for astronomers of the present te make a special study of Saturn.

Neptune is evening star after the 4th, when he is in opposition. Though toe distant to te be seen with the naked eye, he is in excellent position for teleseopic observation, showing a decided disk,and a coloring of blushing white. He also is travelling towards perihelion, which he reaches in 1854.

Mercury is the evening star till the 23rd, when he is in inferior conjunction with the sun and passing to his western side jeins the morning stars. His movements during the early part of the month demand special attention. He reaches his eastern elongation or most distant peint from the sun en the 4th, and is more favorably situate i for being seen as evening star thun he will be fer the rest of the year. The best time to leok fer him is en the evening of the 4th, soon after sunset.

Jupiter is evening star, and theugh shining with royal grace as he mounts gradually to the zenith, presents no new phase nor perceptiblediminution. The great spot still lights his disk with its raddy huep and though ke has passed perhelion, believers in the agency ofthe planets in producing solar commetion will see evidence of a recreatiog pull in the battalions of snowflakes that in mid- winter overwhelmed the West and blockaded the trains with snowdrifts ten feet high ; ia the terrific sea that raged en the western lakes; in the nn- seasonable severity of Canadian snew- storms’, in the shocks of earthquake en the spanish peninsula ; andin the fright- ful warfare of the elements in Buenos Ayres that caused the death of more than a million of cattle in mid-Septem- ber. Jupiter is more than an hour above the horizon at sunset, and sets shortly after 4 o'clock io the merning, at the end of the month about 2.

Venius is evening star and will] be charmisg te behold in the southwest througout November. Venus and Ju- piter are so situated in regard to each other that they form the most attractive feature of the sky in the early evening.

Mars is morning star, but there is little tocommend to notice during the month, as he rises and sets nearly at the same time with the sun. He rises new a little before half-past six, preced- ing the the sun only a few minutes ; at the close of the month about a quarter after six, almost an heur before ihe sun.

Uranus is a morning star and is coming toward us, but is still teo far away to be of any account among planetary notabilities. He rises now about 2 o'clock; at the end of the menth about midnight.

Thus it will pe seen that the Novem- ber nights will be full of interesting planetary incidents. The evening of the 4th will be specially noteworthy. A fascinating picture will be painted on the early evening sky. The two days eld crescent moon, the radiant Venus and swift, footed Mereury may be all seen if the clouds do not cenceal the celestial canvay. At the same time Mercury reaches his most dis- tant point frem thesun, and Nep- tune reaches his opposition when he is most favorably situated for telescepic observation. Jupiter and Venus will be delighiful to watch, as one advances and the other recedes over the celestial road. The clear and crisp Nevember nights are inspiring to star- gazers, for besides the aspect ef the planetary brotherhood, so personal in interest to the dwellers on this little planet, the sky as alive with clustering sonstellations, including some of the most radiant stars that twinkle in the northern concave.
