In the immortal words of Freddy ‘‘Boom-Boom’”’ Washington...’’Hi there.’ My name’s Sean McQuaid, and I’m going to be editing the paper this year. Among other things, that means that you’ ll be seeing some reasonable facsimile of an editorial in this space from now on, but for this issue I thought I’d just take a few lines for us to get to know one another better. By us I mean you, the students, and us, the student paper staff. We’re students too, most of us relatively new to our jobs, and I take this opportunity to point out to you that we can include YOU in that staff. The newspaper is by the students, for the students, and open to any and all students who want to wander into our offices and contribute something. You may be interested in being a reporter on campus or off-campus events; perhaps you'd like to help put the paper together and learn all the fascinating secrets of newspaper layout;maybe you'd like to reporton local or campus sports; or maybe you'd just like to drop us the occasional letter, poem, cartoon, or friendly greeting. Whatever your interests, we'd love to hear from you, and as volunteers you won’t be pressed into anything you don’t want to do. If you’re interested, come by one of our meetings (6:30 PM Tuesdays, so far as I know while I’m writing this...and don’t forget the FREE PIZZA for those in attendance...gee, isn’t bold typeface the next best thing to subliminal messages?) or drop by our office some other time. It’s in the main building, room 06, and if you’re lucky there

may actually be someone there(we’re dedicated students, but

there should be office hours for various staff members posted on the door). Don’ thesitate to try us out. You don’t have to be a professional, it can be a lot of fun, and as they say on TV, you're under no obligation and no salesman will visit you. Having now subjected you to my unabashed recruitment pitch, I may as well say a fewwords about what you can expect from this peerless periodical we call the X-Press. We’re sticking with the present magazine format for the forseeable future, but there may be a few cosmetic nips and tucks here and there with the help of our production

Chris ‘‘say cheese’’ McCarron. We plan to run more texton each page, there’ be some changes in the cover, and you may see other modifications slip in as time goes by. We plan to run things of interest to the students, the most

obvious thing being student news, and if you think you’ ve got

something the student body should know about you can drop usa line on our brand-new answering machine, which should hopefully quiet past complaints of people being unable to reach us with items of interest. We may also cover local off-campus news, where it’s possible, and some local sports. P.E.I. being the hotbed of activity that it is you can always expect lots of miscellaneous articles on various subjects other than news, including various entertainment reviews (we have some money in our budget to pay the price of

admission if you re interested in reviewing movies and shows). We also havea fiction page, Imaginations, dedi- cated to original, student-written prose and poetry, giving all you struggling artists a place to get yourselves published, and there’s numerous other features including the women’s page, professor focuses (foci?),arid, of course, cartoons galore. On the subject of cartoons, I’vebeen asked by many since May about the future of last year’s ‘‘Bodkins”’ strip, and it’s reasonably safe to say that it will resurface in these pages, though not necessarily on a weekly basis considering my new editorial duties. Regarding those editorial duties, I plan to write about things of interest to us as students, and also to scrutinize things outside our academic community, including matters of national, societal, and perhaps even personal interest, anything that cries out for commentary. Beyond my editorials I plan to just try and make our various features as good as they can be, and with the help of our dedicated staff you'll hopefully be enjoying a dynamite student paper.
