The Other Side.

A short time ego some of our exchanges contained a paragraph headed *‘A pathetic incident,” ltine how a young French sailor had jumped overboard from the schooner Brilliant to escape the brutality of the officers of that vessel, and pleaded to be taken aboard a passing fishing schooner. The ariicie in question was forwarded to the British cousule general at New York with instructions to enquire into the facts. This has been done, as will be seen frora the following letter ad dressed to Mr. J. C. Macintosh, president of the Nova Scotia society for the prevention of cruelty :

Sin,—I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the llth instant, inclosing a newspaper extract containing an account of the circumstances of a Young man jumping overboard from the British schooner Brillisnt, while on a voyage from Prince Edward Island to New York. I immediately summoned the master and questioned him closely with re spect to the treatment of the young maa, and now enclose his affilavit 4s well as Mr. John Hughes, « passenger, and Ches. Mc!)ougall’s, an A. B. of the schooner. These affi-lavites have all been given in a straightforward manner, and point to the conclusion that the priated report is only true in this one respec’, viz , the jumping overboard, the sole apparent reason fur his doing so being bis inabiiity to speak English. Seeing the other vessel pass- ing, he hastily filled his pockets with bread and jumped over; nobody chased bim or knew even of his in'ention, and he does not appear to have received the slightest ill-treatment while on board He has deserted the ship since her arrival here, where he learnt that he was expected at the consulate general with reference to his case.

Captain Lewrie tells me he has learned that this is not the first time he has juraped over- board from a vessel he wanted to leave.
