Wasuincron, Aug. 10.--The nature of the answer tothe peace conditicns pre~ sented to the President yesterday can only be conjectured at this stage.

The following is from the best informe~ tion obteinable: “In treating of each sub~ ject—Cuba, Porto Rico, Ladrones, Man- ila—by the peace commission, an accept-

ance in some cases is understood to relate to conditions eomewhat different from‘ those laid down by the American @overn-?} As to Cuba, the Ameriean terms demanded the evacuation of the island without specifying the future form of government.

The Spanish reply is said to accept the principle that Spanish sovereignity over Cuba wili terminate, but it is understood to take upthe future government of the island, and because of Spanish interests there, is siid to take the view, either ex- pre acd or implied, that the United States should administer the affaires of the island. The time of evacuating Cuba is a detail which the Spanish reply is said to regard a8 among maoy whichcin be left to the commission for fina] determination. The American conditions as to Porto Rico, the Ladrones ard Manila, etc., are believed to be accepted. The provision ks to the commission is assented to.

The commission is to cousist of five commissioners on each side, with Paris as the probable meeting place.

The Spanish reply is said to develop the scope of the commission, leaving to it not only the determination of the Philippines, but also the details involved in the ar- rangement ef a lasting peace.
