Till Atlantic Telegraph has brought us the gratifying and important intelliv gence that the main object of the great military expedition into Abyssinia has been attained. A short time after 'I‘heo- dore, through the force ofarms. had be- come king of Abyssinia. there happened to be a number of British subjectsin that country. one of whom was a Consul sent thither by the British Government to en- deavor to negotiate a commercial treaty with the Ayssinians. These men the King imprisoned on the merest whim. The British Gorernmcnt also sent an en‘ s-oy. whom the erratic and tempeatuous Autocrat likewise committed to the dun- geon, and kepthim there at will. Britain looked upon this last act as an aggrava- ted infrACtion of a vital principle oi'intcr- national law. She rentonstrutcd and pleaded till she found such means utterly abortive. Then :i peremptory demand was made for the liberation of her incar- cerated subjects as a right; and plainly stating a declaration ofwar, as the only alternative. in the event of a refusal. This too was unheeilcd. Immediately British power and r'ctermination were shown in the fitting and dispatching ofan‘ immense armament to that all but un- known country. to forcc justice from the hands of the Dospot. Though Africa could once boast of renowned countries and noble cities. she is now al- most a blank on the map of the world. Thech nations of which we have any knowledge, seem to be completely parol- izrd by ignorance and tyranny. All our knowledge of the interior we owe to the ‘ indefatigable and noble efforts of a few enterprising travellers.
