aot tor. Lumps, or kernels called, because they fe

as they are often el like grains ox seeds un lym} h bodies, or glands.

The system of lymph glands and tubes covers the entire body. If it were exposed to view, it would have the ap- pearance of meshwork. Lymph ducts Jead from the skin, from the mucous membrane, and from bore to lympb bodies which are further connected with one another by the same means.

At any point where there is an in- fammation, a sore, a breaking of the skin or mucous surface, there will be found open mouths of lymph ducts into which waste matter is liable to enter. This waste matter sets up an irritation and an enlargement of the lymph bod- ies to which it finds its way. It will now be easily understood how such an enlargement or inflammation of the lymph bodies always points toa state of inflammation at some point, perhaps at a considerable distance from the lumps themselves. Thus a felon on the

fiuger causes enlarged giands to appear ;

in the armpit.

Lumps in the neck may sometimes be plainly traced to eczema of the scalp. Sometimes the mouth is the seat of the trouble. Large and inflamed tonsils may be present, or the teeth may be decaying.

When the ear is the seat of an ab- scess, either before cr during the course of a purulent discharge enlarged glands are common,

Enlarged lymph bodies just behind the angle of the jaw are sometimes sig- nificant of catarrh of the nose and the adjacent portion of the throat.

The existence of enlarged lymph bod- jes for a few days, or sometimes for a longer interval, cannot be said to be in itself dangerous. The case is different when lunips exist for several weeks or longer. They become changed in char- acter after this time and begin to break down and form purulent matter. This stage, too, is more difficult to cure, as surrounding tissue may become affected. The skin over the glands is involved and becomes part of the large, soft, red or purplish swelling, now called an ab-

scess, Which either breaks or is lanced |

by the surgeon.

These enlargements may become in- vaded by the tubercle bacilli, from which consumption of the lungs ora general consumption may develop.

During the course of an infectious disease, when the glands in the neck sometimes become enlarged, the care of

the throat must not be neglectcd. The uso of an antiseptic solution on the affected parts will often produce an im- mediate good result.—Youth’s Com-

WANTED, SOME 'BURGLARS.

Valuable Heirlooms. * A man rushed into the business office of one of the daily papers and stopped at the advertising window. There he secured a pad of paper anda pencil with a £:ring to it. He wrote and erased, and then tore up what he had written, chew- ing the fragments savagely while he made another copy.

‘‘There,’’ he said at last, as he thrust the paper into the hand of tke advertising clerk, ‘‘count the words and tell me what they will cost for one in- sertion. I reckon that will fetch them.”

This was the advertisement:

‘*Burglars are requested to call some night this week on Mr. and Mrs. Eras- tus Brown, Ash court. A door and win- dow will be left open and every facility offered for removing the spoils.’’

‘*But this is a very unusual form of advertisement,’’ said the clerk, with a troubled look. ‘I don’t know whether to put it under the head of personal or educational. What is your motiy may I ask?’’ ,

‘“‘My motive?’ said the advertiser, ‘*is to get rid of eu awful incubus of inherited truck without any respensi- bility fastened upon me. I might burn the house down, but in that case I would be expected to save the heirlooms or perish with them. Say, young man, were you ever the victim of a legacy?’

‘*‘No,’’ said the clerk, with a friend- ly grin. ‘‘ What a funny question.’’

‘*No old maid aant ever died and left you a dozen battered silver teaspoons that had come down from Oliver Crom- well?’’

**Never!’’

*‘Lucky chap! Never had a solid sil- ver punch bow! bequeathed to you by a bibulous old uncle who was a disgrace to the family while he lived, but prum- ised to return and haurt you if you didn’t entertain his comrades once a

year out of that bowl?’’

‘*‘Nor a great-grandmother who left you a silver soup ladle with a coat of arms of some unknown dead and gone ancestor which must be placed under your pillow every night for safe keep- ing?’’

‘‘No,’’ said the clerk. ‘‘I belong to plain, everyday people, and we haven't a@ coat of arms to our backs.’’

‘*Be thankful, young man, You little realize what a blessed lot is yours. To crown our misfortunes, another relative died in Paris last week and left us her diamonds. But 1 draw the line at dia- monds, and so does my wife. We take turns now sitting up with the silver. After the burglars come and clean nus out we shall begin to live.
