n court here the other day, Messrs Lacoste and Casgrain insisted that Judge Andrews should force Oardinal Tachereau to reply to @ question that was put to His Eminence as a witness in a suit that had been brought against a religious order.

On Saturday L’ Electuer said that the two lawyers wanted to send the Cardinal to jail. Messrs. Lacoste and Casgrain having sued that paper it comes out to-day with an ample apoligy and takes everything back.

Damage By the Tide.

Boston, Oct. 27.

The extremely high tide of the past two days has caused much damage along the line of the Boston, Revere Beach and Lynn Railroads. The East Boston Tunnel con- tains water a foot in depth, and beyond the tunnel nothing but water can be seen. The water is clean over the sea wall and at Winthrop Junction everything is complete- ly surrounded with water. The residents sre imprisoned in their houses until the tide subsides No damage to the docks is reported.

The Carleton Railway.

At « meeting of the Common Council this afternoon, a committee reported on the offer of the Dominion Government to sell the Carleton branch railway to the city for $50,000. They recommended that the offer be accepted, and that they be authorized to negotiate for the transfer. The report was adopted, The city intend to hand the branch over to the Canadian Pacific, which will give the latter « clear right of way down to the western harbor front.

37 operats on the Western Union Tele- graph Company's office in this city, struck at Sp. m., to-night. All the company’ wires into this city are ijle. The walk out i« on account of the discharge by the compaany a few days ago, of six operators, supposed to belong to the brotherhood. The discharged men called on Supt. McMichael, of Minne- apolis,this afternoon, to try toleffect an agree- ment, but weie net recognized, the trike is the result.

He Got Nine Years.

Lawrence, Mass., Uct. 27.

In the superior court to-day, Willian Murdock, of Lynn, pleaded guilty to placing a rail on the Boston and Maine railway tracks at Saugus. He did Jit in hope of obtaining a reward for notifying the railroad officers of the obstruction. He was sentenced to nine years in the state prison.
