STORMY DAY THOUGHTS.

If we are, these stormy days wil! be a help rather than a hindrance, to us. Are there not some problems that have suggested themselves to us during busy times, when we had not time to solve them, that might be solved now ?
You remember that last year one of
your meighbors had a much _bet- ter yield of grian than you had. Why was this so? Was his land

and overhauled a number of stooks of grain, and selected the largest and most verfect eara and threshed them out by themselves. In this way he got a pure seed, true to kind and the very best of its kind, Every stalk from this seed would have a chaneetodo well,asthere would be no puny stalks the result of half developed seed. This ig the way any of us can improve a variety of grain—by selection.
We cannot afford to cow poor seed and burdep the land with sickly puny stalks that yield little grain ofa poor quality. Every grain we sow should have a chance to give us a good increase. Thousands of dollars are lost to our farmers every year through neglect tos.w gocd seed.
The difference between good seed and inferior is the difference between a good paying crop anda crop that is grown at a serious loss.
By carefully selecting the best devel- oped heads for seed any cereal may be grown year after year witho t change of seed and not deteriorate but improve in quality.
Try this and prove it for yourself it will pay you every time.
What is true of grain is equally true of all otherszeds. Professor William Saunders, Director of the Experimental Farms, stated in the hearing of the writer ata meeting of the Western Agricultural con- vention, that the reason our blue potatoes have been grown so long without deterior- ating, was that we always selected our best and largest for seed. He said such a thing was unknown in Ontario as a variety of potatoes being grown for such a great number of years without running out,—and the reason was, they planted their culls.
Another problem that may have bothered you last season was, “Why did your neighbor receive so much larger returns per Cow from the cheese factory than you did?” This is worth solviug, if it should ee time, for it makes all the dif- ference whether you are keeping milch cows for company or for profit.
Perhaps the solution might be some- thing like this.
Your neighbor has been paying atten- tion to the milking qualities of his cows, and by breeding and selecting has esta- blished a pretty good dairy herd. This he may have done with very little expense simply by selecting the heifer calves to
from bis best milkers and breeding toa sire of some good milking strain. You may have been going along in some hap- hazard way believing a calf was a calf anyhow. But now you find a cow is not half a cow at the cheese factory.
You are not going to get a good dairy herd unless you are working on some defin- ite plan with that end in view.
But perhaps you had good cows but did not feed them right. If this was the caee, yeu may as well understand at once that you cannot cheat the cew and get off with it as she will resent any mean nig- gardly treatment with regard to feed or care she receives. But mind you, she was always respond liberally to good feed and comfortable surroundings. Keep her com- fortable and feed her well now, and she will more than pay you for it next summer Establishing a cheese factory in your locality will not make you rich unless you do the fair thing by the cow.
There is no royal road to success for the farmer. Eternal vigilance and the moet careful attention to all the details of our business is the condition of success in agricultural pursuits to-day.
We must study te adapt our stock to the particular use we put them to, and if we are going to make a speciality of cheese- making we must have a cow specially adapted for it, or we will net be able to produce cheese cheaply enough to give us a fair profit.
Cheap production is the watchword of success in agriculture as well as in every other business. Profitsdepend more on the cost of production than on the amount of any product we may have to sell.
We cannot afford to keep such stock, or allow weeds and thistles to choke our grain or we will fail in the battle and be run over and crushed with the advancing wheels of progress and prosperity. But we must return to snow shovelling and leave writing till the next stormy day.

A tubular boiler 1800 years old has been discovered at Pompeii. It is made of sheet metal, probably copper, in the shape ota large amphora or two-handled jar, with a hollow space running half way up the centre of the jar. In this space was placed a cylindrica! firebox resting on five firebars, which are tubes three-quarters of an inch in diameter, connecting with the water space. The fuel seems to have been charcoal.

A French Mathematical Prodigy.
Young Vernier, the mathematical prodigy from the provinces, of whose success in obtaining admission to the ligher normal school without under- going an examination yon were inform ed a few days ago, has arrived here, and isthe object of much curiosity. This youth of eighteen has a great opin- ion of his genius, for, when couipliment- ed on his wonderful proficiency, he calmly remarked that mathematics were so badly taught in France that he had no troublein convincing the real sav- ants of the “insanity” of the prevailing methods. He says that during his stay at the Lyons Lycee his master treated him as a ‘‘visionary”; but, he adds generously, ‘‘I forgive the poor man.” Vernier attracted notice by entering into correspondence with several mathe- maticians of note, who imagined that
they were replying to an elderly savant like themselves, and were astounded when they ascertained
that he was aschoolboy. The Minister of Public Instruction was informed of the existence of this “infant pheno menon,” and promptly admitted him to the higher normal school on his own re sponsibility. Young Vernier does not intend to repose on his laurels. On the contrary, he is writing for the Academy of Science a work which will be ready by the summer, and which, as he con- fidently puts it, will bring about ‘‘a re- volution like that accomplished by La place and Newton.” He attributes every mathematical discovery to ‘‘intuition,” of which he evidently believes that he has a considerable stock at his com- mand. Itremains to be seen whether young Vernier wili succeed in carrying out his threat of demolishing the exist ing system, and it is quite possible that he overrates his powers. There is no doubt, however, that he possesses ex ceptional talents, and his career will be watched with interest.—Paris Corres- pondence London Telegraph.
The Irish Elk.
Perhaps nothing enables the layman to realize the existence of the yreat Atlantean continent so well as to be brought face to face with some of the remains of that great arena of man’s past development. There were giants in those days, as Scripture tells us, and the mighty hunters had mighty game for their prey. The Irish Elk, which stands about fifteen feet high, is one of the best known of these monsters. Its remains are very common in the lake Geposits of Ireland, which is the last aurviving remnant of Atlantis. The Irish Elk is not a true elk, but inter
mediate between the fallow and the reindecr. The deer family, so far as discovered, do not extend beyond the Upper Miocene. However the sub- merged strata have not been investigat ed. The first warning to the doomed
coutinent came in Eocene times and the final catastrophe in the Miocene period. Has anyone considered the possibility of the enormous antlers having been de- veloped as weapons of defence against the attacks of the aerial monsters of early days ?—Tcronto Lamp.
To Preveut Cold Feet.
Do you haye cold feet? If so, don’t incre.se the thickness of your stock- ings, but the size of your shoes. The most important rule to follow to obtain warm feet is never to be tightly shod.
Boots or shoes that fit closely prevent the free circulation of the blood by pres sure; but when, on the cont ary, tl ey do not embrace the foot too firmly, the space left between the shoe and the stocking has a good supply of warm air.
The second rule is never to sit in damp shoes. It is often supposed that unless shoes are positively wet it is un- necessary to change them while the feet are atrest. This is a great fallacy, for when the least dampness is present in the sole in its evaporation it absorbs the heat from the foot, and thus perspira- tion is dangerously checked. This can easily be proved by trying the experi- ment of neglecting the rule. The feet will be found cold and damp after a few minutes, although on taking off the shoe and examining it, it will appear to be quite dry” —~---—_—_—
