Post-War Aviation

in s. report entitled "The Future of Trans- port", recently pmplrod by the National R¢- soirrccs Planning Board of the United States, a \'Zl_\[ growth is forecast for post-war aviation. The: rcport indicates that air passenger business will grow at a rapid rate and will make consider- able inroads on rail passenger business. Feeder air lines will cover the nation end it is consider- ed that the time is not for distant when all first- cluss mail will move by air whenever time can be sored. It is felt that air express will greatly iticrezise as costs are lowered to the rail level, and that sir freight will slso grow as volume increases and costs an reduced.

These predictions, of course, apply also to Ciilllltlll, the two nations being already insepar- ably linlccd by a continental network of airways. While no public announcement has been made on the Canadian Government's post-war air policy, either about domestic or international an- de- velopments, it is assumed that at Ottawa, as at ,V\'ashington, this question is being given serious attention. All authorities on the subject paint s bright picture of his country's place on the air map of the post-war world.

It may be that this little Province, with its eommodious airways provided for war training purposes, will become an important junction on the world's aerial crossroads when the war is over. In any ous there is mason to hops that our present problems of trsnsportstion—prob- lems due to our insular position——will cease to be of any great consequence in the years to come. Airplanes will have made them almost non- existent. A few weeks ego, we iii d pigs b sir from this Province to Newloun land; and it is not inconceivable that in post-war years prac- tically sll our farm exports —- even our cattle if need be-vvill go by the same route; and not only so Newfoundland but so the Central Provinces, the New States, or wher- ever the moot profitable market hsppens to be.

Another Record For Scotland

Mr. G. B. Johnson, Canedien Government Trade Commissioner in Glasgow, -~Sc0tland,- states that it appeared that this year Scotland would have almost a record acreage under eul- tivatioit. It was greater than the 19x8 figure, reached sftsr four ycsrs of effort in its last war. Compared with 194x, which showed a great gain over 1940 and r939, the report states in the current year there are 14,000 more acres in Scotland under wheat; 35,000 more under barley; 88,000 more under outs and 17.000 more planted so potatoes. The Department of Agriculture for cotland had aimed at having 12,000 acres under sugar beet; the result was 14,200 acres, exceeding by more than 4o per tent the greatest acreegc planted before the war. ,The sugar beet factory at Cupar would accord- ingly be able to operate for the first time at something elose to capacity, which ls the pro- duce from over 15,000 acres in the season. While there has been only a slight change in the number of male workers on the land in Scotlsod this year female workers have increased by nearly 4,000, which is approximately the strength of ,\Vomen’s Land Army. Scotland's farm tractors now number about 15,000, which is roughly s 1-: times the number before the war. Of these about x3400 belong so farmers, 1.000 to the Depsrtmcnt of Agriculture for Scotland and 50o so private contractors.

Unfortunately, it is not to be . expect- cd that the Nazi andn Fascist gangsters will be moved to extend reciprocal fair treat- ment to such British, Canadian and American nationals es are living in the territories under their control; but it is all to the good that Anglo- Saxon countries should mskc the generosity of their policies stand out in striking contrast to the oppressions of the Axis Powers.

The British Army Bureau of Current Af- fairs has been set up for the purpose of keeping troops informed and alert about the progress and roblcrns of the war. It has now been go- ing or over a year. There was some opposi- tion so it at first. Some ople said that if you set men discussing aw ard problems you would be bound to have quarrels and bad blood. If the platoon officer was in charge of a discus- sion that became angry, wouldn't his authority over the men suffer, wouldn't discipline suffer? Wouldn't the soldiers get too political, or, if they didn't, wouldn't they be bored to death with it? It hestfl- worked out that way. Sometimes men have sworn st one another and lost their tunpsrs a bit, sometimes the bsrrsck-room law- yer has had loo much of his mm way, but that doesn't last. What happens after a hit is that the agitator is answered by men who learn that they, too, have tongues in their heads and can put their views forward. The dissussions are s fine safety valve. Here is a chance, once s week, for even a private soldier to tell his of- ficer that he doesn't agree with what the of- ficer has said on some topic; for instance, such as the Indian problem, or the Dieppe raid, or the Merchant Navy. The soundness of British morale, unquestionably, can be traced in some small degree to these discussions. Morale is rather different from discipline; morale springs from the spirit and mind, from the reason. Na- poleon ssid: "All war is mcfltsl." Somebody has said that these discussions take the barb out of a grievance, the poison out of a rumour, or the bees out of a bonnet. And no doubt they do. But they also help to create a true citizen army of responsible, thinking men who know
