ACQUIRED TRAITS.

A group or ladies and gentlemen who had listened toa paper on a science sub- ject in a private parlor cornered a person addicted to science to settle a disputed question. He did not think acquired traits are ever transmitted.

“There are one legged men enough in this country to support several cork leg establishments, yet never has the child of a one legged man been born with less than two. Certain characteristics of the parent the child may have. It may be a comical- ly exact reproduction. Always, however, it is the natural and not the acquired pe- culiarities of the parent or other ancestor that it shows. Hence Professor Weissman argues that acquired qualities or charac- teristics are never transmitted.

A Baltimore man, a man of wealth, married a beautiful sewing girl. When a black child was born to her, there was trouble. Then it was revealed that her mother was a mulatto. A Greek married a fair slave girl, and when she gave birth toa black child her blood was traced back to an African. ‘There are persons who think thatif a man makes himeelf, say, a great linguist his children will be more likely to have the gift of tongues. They think the chil- dren born to 4 parent after he has become dissipated are more liable than the chil- dren born earlier to inherit a taste for drink. These things Weissman denies. In

“The long accepted theory has never been quite satisfactory. It lcaves so much unaccounted for. If acquired qualities are inherited, the world ought to be crowded with greatness. Yet it is notorious that few great men leave sons as great. A\l- though education is within the reach of all and the methods of education are the product of centuries of experience, Shakes- peares and Miltonsand Napoleons are not common yet.

‘‘On the other hand, we might expect a steady increase of drunkards if acquired propensities aie transmitted. Asa matter of fact, there is much less drunkenness than there was half a century ago, al- though the pressure of modern life and an irritable condition of the nerves are cal- culated to promote dissipation.

“The later doctrine does not deny the importance of heredity. It does not make it less important for the parent to lead an upright and careful life, since his children are influenced by his example, though they do not inherit his mental and physical ac- quisitions as they may his property. If acquired traits are inherited, it should be

easy to prove. It has not been proved.’’— Washington Post.
