When Mrs, Cass became ill three months ago with dropsy, and was informed she could not recover, she re{used to believe it and ordered a full length mirror placed in her room. Moyxrreat, Oct. 1.—An_ important Conference took place yesterday between Mr. T. G. Shaughnessy, vice-president of the Canadian Pacific Railway, and Mr. J. B. MeArtbur, president of Rosslaud, (B. C.) Board of Trade, as a result of which Mr. Shaughnessy promised that the Canadian Pacific would build into Rossland at once, and that individvais connected with the railway would furnish the necesary capital to erect a emelter in the vicinity of Rossland, so that ores from the company be treated cheaper than they are across the border. In fact, it is proposed that the charge for smelting will be as near cost as possible. The C. P. R. will also connect the smelter with an aerial railway system, so that there will be easy access from all the mines.

The Charlottetown Engineer Company under command of Major Weeks was inspected on Saturday by Capt. Twining, R. E. The infantry inspection took place at Victoria Park in the morning. The turn-out was large; the men looked emart, and the uniforms and accoutrements were clean and in good order.

After having received the inspector, who was accompanied by Lieut. Col. Mcore and Sergt. Major Warburton, with a genera! salute, the company marched past and was then put through several battalion and company movements by the commanding officer and the other officers of the com

pany.
