The University of Manitoba plans to begin offering ath-

There has been some concern that the Canadian Inter-col- legiate Athletic Union (CIAU)

The CIAU ncw has a policy that schools offering scho- larships can no longer cone pets in tte CIAU.

Spokespeople for the U. of Manitoba have said that the CIAU may soon overturn * at policy and let schol— arship—offering schools compete.

Regan said scholarships from private funds may be necessary if the provinces do not adequately finance the universities' athletics programs and amateur sport in general.

He said his departnent would like to help but the loss of revenue from lot— teries to provincial juri— sdiction means more money cannot come from the fed— eral government.

Provincial and municip— al governments, he said, should supply funding for athletic facilities which would entice athletes to Stay in the Country.
