"Chinese Bridge" Again Comes Up in House

The "Chinese Bridge" came into prominence again yesterday when Mr. R. R. -Bell. Leader of the Op- position. asked Premier J. Walter Jones when it was bought and how much it cost. The questions were tabled in the La, ..ure and were answered by the leader of the Government.

The bridge was purchased June 2. 1051, and was bought by the pound at a total cost of 3469.036. No other payments have been made. but storage bills to date haev been 518,714 with the storage on i.he four spans which have been sold amounting to 58.806. Byweight. the four of the eleven spans sold amounted to 353 percent. For this the Government received 8169.445 for a net gain of 540.418 less in- terest.

Three spans were sold to the Canadian National Railway with one span. not yet delivered not paid for. being sold to a Toronto firm. ThePremier staterl thntplans had not yet been finalized regard- ing the possible use of any such bridge or steel in this Province.

The repodt. which covers the period ending Dec: 31. 1952, strong- ly recommends that two suitable medical doctors receive speciai training in public health and be employed. one to operate out of the central office serving the eastern part of the Province, the other out of Summerside serving the western portion. If suitable staff could be. procured to work under the direc- tion of these officers. an excellent service cou-id be provided through- out. the Island,

Reference is miide in this con- nection to the new Health Centre established in the Prince County H09Dltai Annex in Summerside which will serve the entire populg- tion'of the western part of the PTt')'Vlf'iCE. Full scale functioning of this centre at present awaits the llrocurcment of suitable furniture and necessary additions to the staff.

The report notes that public health remained at a high level in the Province throughout the year. A new method of reporting and re- cording communicable diseases, be- gun Jan. l. 1952. has resulted in a marked iniprovenierit in the am- oiuit of information on such dis- eases occurrlng througlhout the Province. No cases of diphtheria occurred in 1952. Tliirly-one cases of whooping cough were reported with no deaths. The low incidence of these diseases may be attributed to the excellent program of iii- iioei-lntioii carried out.

While no cases of smallpox have occurred in the Province since l9.'il. it is still considered a potential daiiger. and the present v:icciiiti- tion program is being continued and expanded.
