Tue schooner Louisa, owned by D. Farquharson, of this city, went ashore at Merigomish, N. S., on Monday evening, where she still remains. As she is in a very good position, it is thought she will come off unhurt. The report that one of the crew was drowned is incorrect.

Tne Coroner and jury on the Kelly in- quest met at 11 o'clock to-day, and were obliged to adjourn until to-morrow, on ac- count of the non-arrival of the steamer M. A. Starr, the captain of which is an im- portant witness. The case will probably be left to the jury after the captain’s evi- dence is taken.

Tne steamer Worcester, Hedge, master, sailed for Boston at five o’clock this even- ing, with a cargo of 1,760 barrels of mack- erel, 333 cases of eggs and 100 empty oil casks. Mr. John McLean, Mrs. Edward Fisseur, Miss Christy Shaw, Miss Jessie McLaren and Mr, Crawford were passen- gers.

Grit SLANDER—‘‘ whose tongue out-venoms all the worms of Nile”—is being heaped upon the head of Lion, F, Brecken because he heeded not the frouns of the Loeal Premier, and manfully -represented fair-play at the Dri'l Shed. It is apparently well nigh forgotten that Mr. Brecken and his friends provided the public crib at which the leading slanderers tecd.

Sim Anpert Smiru, in the course of his speech upon the issues of the day at Petti- codiac, said he ‘‘ thought that a reasonable part of the taxation ought to fall upon ship- ping.” This explains one difliculty about the Government programme, viz., where they are going to get money (if they succeed at the elections) to make up the deficits. They propose to tax the shipping interest. — lx. Reporter.

At the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court this forenoon Richard White, drunk and dis- orderly, was fined $3 and costs or fourteen days ; Lemuel White, for the same offence, was fined $4 or twenty days; John Mc- Quarrie, drunk and incapable, was fined $2 and costs or eight days ; Daniel McNevin, for trespassing on the property of Charles McDonald, Lower Spring Park Road, was fined $6 or one month and $4 for damages to McDonald’s property. McNevin was also fined $10 or one month’s hard hard labor for assaulting Benj. Heartz.

Our New Governor Grnerat.—The Marquis of Lorne, appointed Viceroy of the Dominion of Canada, has issued his ad- dress bidding farewell to his constituents in Argylshire. His Lordship says he will al- ways look back with feelings of the greatest pleasure and gratitude to the time during which he represented the county in Parlia- iment, and itis only because, through the favor of the Queen, he now has an oppor- tunity of serving a country most dear to all in the United Kingdom, that he resigns that position.

Tu election has been sprung upon us. The electors have but three weeks to pre- pare for the coming election. This is but another evidence of Grit foul play. The Canada Gazette Extra, issued on the 17th, contains three proclamations. ‘The first proclamation orders the dissolution of the third Parliament of the Dominion. The second proclamation orders the calling to- gether of the new Pacliament on Saturday, September 2ist. The third proclamation authorizes the issue of writs for the elect’on of a new Parliament, nominations through- out the Dominion to take place on the 10th September and polling on the 17th. Mani- tba nominations will be held on the 12th September.

One hundredand twenty-nine cases of yel- low fever were reported in New Orleans yesterday and forty-two deaths. At mem- phis nineteen new cases and twelve deaths. The inhabitants continue to leave the city, and it is estimated that not more than 5,000 whites now sleep within its limits at night. There is no change in the situation at other infected points.

George Vining Bowers, the actor, was buried to-day from the Little Around the Corner. of the College of the City of New York,died yesterday, aged 52.

it is a well-know fact that for many years past the prices of other Cape Breton coals have been regulated by the rates fixed for SYDNEY COAL; but while it is true that other coals, to get a sale at ail, have been pressed on the market at various prices under the current rate of SYDNEY COAT, it is no less true that, taking into account the superior lastin qualities of SYDNEY COAL when compar with other Cape Breton coals, the advantage, both as to economy and convenience, is in favor of SYDNEY COAL, even at a much higher price.

The General Mining Association (Limited) regret that they should again have to caution the Public against the attempts being made from time to time to induce them to buy in- ferior coals purporting to be ‘‘ EQUAL TO SYDNEY,” “SUPERIOR TO SYDNEY,” ete., etc., while some yet more unscrupulous vendors have not hesitated to advertise their coalas SYDNEY COAL (from some design ited locality). All these efforts to sell coal by such means aré only so many admissions on the part of those who make them of the sTaNDARD character of SYDNEY COAL,

It has come to the knowledge of the Asso- ciation that in frequent instances pao giving orders to truckmen and others for SYDNEY COAL have been furnished with other and inferior coal. The Public are cautioned against permitting themselves to be imposed upon in this way.

Every vessel loaded at THE SYDNEY MINES is furnished with a certificate of the cargo being Sydney Coal. Parties purchasing should satisfy themselves by demanding the production of this certificate.

The ‘‘ Sydney Coal” is registered under the laws of the Dominion, and unauthorized parties using the Trade Mark ““SYDNEY COAL” are liable to prosecution.
