An Incident in the Boyhood of Hans Christian Andersen.

When this wonderful story teller was a little boy he lived in Denmark. His father was a shoemaker and the family was very poor. When he was a little fellow, he went inio a field with his mother and anumber of children to glean the wheat which the reapers had left in the field. While the poor children were gathering the gleanings by little handfuls, an angry officer came along armed witha whip. All ran as fast as they could away from the angry man man; but little Hans was baretooted, and the sharp stubble cut his feet, so that he could net get away. Not afraid the lad faced the angry man and his upraised whip : “How dare you strike me when you know God sees you 2” he cried, looking fearlessly into the angry man’s face. The whip came down but not on little Hans. The man admired the boy,s courage and praised him for it, and sent him heme with gifts rather than blows.— Ex.

Clergymen and Chileren.

All clergymen regard talking to chil- dren as one of the most hazardous functions of the minsterial office, says an exchange, though many of them are apparently unaware that the colloquial and interogative method, which they often adopt for the sake of more effect- ually holding the juvenile attention, vastly increases the liability of catas- trophe.

“T will tell you,” said a visiting clergyman, addressing a Sunday school, “of an adventure I once had in Colo- rado. I was going througha forest, and I came face to face with an im- mense panther. What do you suppose I did ?”

“You killed him ” suggested one.

“You runned,” shouted another.

“No children there was no chance to run. I jast stood perfectly still, and looked the fierce snarling beast steadily in the eye.”

“Which eye?” anxiously inquired a breathless little boy, and the man who had faced the panther fell ingloriously before the questioo of an infant.

A well known clergyman of Chicago, addressing a large gathering of children on the occasion of the last Christmas festival, thought to impress a certain truth on their minds by the employ-— ment of a familiar figure of speech. “Children,” when you are having an enjoyable and happy time we will call that a silver time; and when you are having a very tiresome and disagree-- able time we will call that—let me see we will call that a copper time. Now, children, will one of you tell me what kind of a time you are having at present ?”,

“Please, sir,” answered a little girl, “we are having a copper time.”

Megic Writing

Present a person with a slip of paper a pen and a tumbler of water and desire him to dip the pen into the water and write down whatever he pleases.

When dry, the words will be invis— ible, but if the paper is immersed in the contents of the tumbler, the writ- ing will make its appearance quite dis tinctly.

To perform this the pen should be a quill one and new, and the water in the tumbler should have one or two crystals of sulphate of iron (green vitriol) previously dissolved in it, while, the writer should be careful the pen does not get dry in use.

When the writing has been execut- ed, the tumbler should be taken away, on pretense cf the water being rather dirty and wanting changing. Another similar tumbler is brought back fiiled to the same height with water, in which a few drops of tincture of galls have been poured. When the paper is immersed in this, the writing will quickly appear.
