Edgar, manager of the Northwestern Miller, to carry the 2,000 tons of food which have been collected for the famine stricken te of Russia. A literary society has been organized at Crapaud, with a membership of twenty- five. The following are the officers: G U. Stevenson, President - J. F Covey, M.D., Vice-President; O B. Wadman, Secy.- Treasurer; R. H. Cameron, Alonzo E, Trowsdale and Albert Sturdy, Exeutive Committee. The Society meets on Friday evening of each week at 7.30 o’clock. The subject for discussion last evening was, ** Which is the greatest evil in the world, war or intemperance.” After a lengthy discussion lasting two hours the house was divided on the question, a maj rity appear- ing in favor of intemperance being the greatest evil.

A REUNION OF THE FACTIONS VERY PRO- BABLE.

Mr. T. P. O'Connor says: The stillness of the Irish political atmosphere jast at pre- sent indicates, we have rerson to believe, the coming, or at least a belief in the com- ing of a reunion of thefactions. The Irish are a little tired, and also alittle ashamed of continuing a struggle, the cause for which no longer exists. The more ra- tional members of the minority have alter- ed the tone of their speeches, and ne long- er indulge in insults and calumnies. Whether there is to be permanent peace or not it is too early to state with confid- ence. But there is at present something in the nature of truce, and we are rejviced to believe that the era of bitter personal re- criminations is passe.

Referring to the recent meeting of the McCarthyites, Mr. O'Connor says : ‘‘We never saw a gathering more serious, more under control. The speeces were lis ened to with unbroken attention, and debatable questions were talked over without unreason- able criticism. We asked several members the reasou for this unanimity, and received from all the same answer in substance, namely, that it was the effect of the terrible lesson taught by the occurence in committee room 1d.

~—- Sir Ambrose Shea, the Newfoundlander who is governor of the Bahamas, has just been congratulated on the completion of cable communication between the islands and the mainland. The line is from Jupiter, Fia., to Nassau, the capital, and will be a decided advantage to the business inter- ests of the islands. The work is largely due to the action of Sir Ambrose, whose administration of the island's affsirs has been marked by a number of industrial movements the people will profit by. The experiment of putting a business man at the head of affairs has been a success in the Bihamas and might prove advan- tageous in othors of the languid ovlonies of che Empire.
