One Society member deserves a big vote of thanks for her persistence in the face of many adversities. The grape vine recently issued a press release that neither rain, nor wind, nor snow, nor postal strikes deter Margaret Mallett from ensuring that

our newsletter is delivered. Keep up the good work, Margaret! Undelivered newsletters may be picked up at the December meeting.

NOTES FROM YOUR NEWSLETTER EDITOR Junior Naturalists Corner

In this issue of the newsletter, we have a section written by junior naturalists which will continue for as long as I continue to receive material. For this issue, articles and poems were submitted by children from Marshfield School. I hope teachers from other schools encourage children to write material for our newsletter. If they don't, send your material directly to the newsletter editor.

Newsletter Editor Wanted

The January issue of the newsletter will be the last one which I will be involved in. I will be out-of-province for the following three to four months. The Society is asking for a volunteer to take over this position for the spring of l976.

ZPG AND IMMIGRATION

Zero Population Growth is petitioning the Government of Canada to reduce immigration.

FACTS. Canada has 22.7 million peeple. Immigration has averaged lh0,000 per year since l9h5. The 2l8,000 immigrants in I974 accounted for half of Canada's population increase.

ZPG‘s VIEWPOINT. Every country has the right and the obligation to limit its popu- lation level. Canada's resources are limited. The 7% of our land area which is potential farmland is being continually reduced by the growth of cities and towns. We cannot support a large population in our “open spaces“ or in the environmentally fragile north. Our population should be stabilized at 30 million. IMMIGRATION must be reduced to make this possible.

ZPG has sent a letter to more than 300 conservation organizations in Canada. ZPG is asking the federal government to impose a ceiling of 100,000 immigrants per year. However, from the replies received so far, 73% of supporters of the petition have preferred the option of less than 50,000 immigrants per year.

The petition was taken to the last Natural History meeting, but in the press of otherbusiness it was not formally brought before the meeting. However, we do have l0 signatures from members. Please give this matter some thought. At the December meeting you will have the opportunity to record your option.
