Public Vorality in England.

Tue recent trial of the Oxford University professor who endeavored to levy black- mail upon Lord Russell, has given rise to a comparison of the morality of publie men in England at the present time with the mor- ality of the public men of former gener- ations. {[t has been pointed out that in the old days, when a Minister of the Crown waa not expected to compete in virtue with @ minister of religion, and when even ministers of religion were very frequently shining examples to their fl cks of the kind of conduct te be most carefully avoided, a blackmailer had nothing like the field which he now possesses for his operations. If he had, for instance, demanded money from Sir Horace Walpole under threat of, accusing him of political corruption, or from John Wilkes in lieu of trumpeting him abroad as a profligate, we ean imagine the complete contemp' with which such claims would have been regarded. Political cor- ruption and personal profligacy were, un- happily, not so rare among etatesmen in those days that any great shock would have been given to the public mind if accusations of this sort had been made. Nor were there such means as nowadays exist for spreading the story broadcast among the people. Now all is changed. The tone of public morals has become far purer, and consequently men are much more alarmed than the: used to ba if they think there is achance of their fair fame being aspersed.

their palaces and receiving them frequently at our beautiful lodge. I believe they are

The waters around us here in the Straits Settlements are very shallow, the whole Straits being apparently the result of a submergence of land in the far away years of the past. Penang is like Ararat, on which the ark rested, the top of an un- ce: -vered hill range. Some day it again may change. He explained the benefits that would accrue from organ- ization, socially, in the purchase of im- proved animals for breeding purposes, good | seeds, ariificial manures, etc., and said it: had been the life and prosperity of every other calling, and why not be the same for farmers? Every person on the Island had to depend on the farmer, and he hoped, that al] would put their shoulders to the wheel and shove, as the prosperity of the farmers was the prosperity of all the otbers Capt. Howlett, Sturgeon, Messrs. Ai ken, (storekeeper), Collins. Annear and Thompson, also spoke on the subject, saying in effect that something must be done to stopthe practice which has been going on those late years, or else the farmers Would have to move to some other place They expressed the confidence , they had in organiaation, and said that far- | mers should have organized long ago, and they would have been in a very different posi- tion to-day. Notes from Red Point.

The fine weather of the early pat of this | month inspired the people with the hope that it would be an early spring for farm- | ing and fishing, but Jack Frost returned in full blast and reversed the order of | things.

The l»bster factory at Red Point owned by Messrs McInnis, McLellan & Co. is undergoing repairs this spring. This enter- prising firm began operations in the fishing business in the summer of 1889. and since that time they have made rapid strides in advancement. Last year they shipped to foreign markets seven hundred cases of lobsters, and three hundred cases of cape- lin, but their prineipal trade this year will | be the canning of smelts.

We are very glad to see our Patriotic correspondent in our midst again looking | hale and hearty after his sojourn among the Indians of the West. He speaks in the highest terms of the treatment he re- ceived from those savage tribes, which will hkely be seen in the Patriot at some future date. |
