HANDS popular in many European countries. North opened the bid-

ding with two hearts. thereby showing a hand of intermediate strength.

South made the natural re- sponse of two spades and then rebid his spades when North said three hearts. North then reaised to four spades. confusion set . in a better hand from North for his open- ing two bid. said five clubs to show the ace.

North misinterpreted this call. thinking it was a bid asking about second round club con- trol. and accordingly bid five notrump to show the king.

It was now South's turn to go wrong. He understood the five‘ notrump bid to be a grand slam force, requesting him to jump to seven spades if he had two of the three top trump honors. since he had them. he bid seven spades.

All of which goes to show that if you use too many gadg- biddtng. the danger of misappiying them is constant and anything can happen at any time.

However. the hand had a happy outcome -- viewed from

the North-South position. West.

on lead with no clear-cut choice. opened a club. Deciarer won with. the ace. drew trumps. established the hearts. and got rid of his three diamond losers on the J-8-3 of hearts. So South made the g r a n d slam for a score of 2.210 points. instead of going down three with a dis- mond lead.

At the second table. South got to four spades with normal bidding and made exactly four when‘ West chose a diamond as his opening .

The moral seems to be: lt pays to misbid!
