It appears that a bridge having been earmied away by the freshet, he was attempt- ing to cross on a round log, which rolled and threw him ja the water. As the stream was only three feet deep, it seems strange that he should have drowned, A coroner's inquest was held this forenoon, but we have not heard the verdict,

Tue Board of License Commissioners for Queen's County met to-day for the purpose of considering the applications received by the Inspector for Licenses under the ‘License Act 1883,”" No business was transacted owing to the absence of Sheriif Longworth who was attending the faneral of one of the family. The Board adjourned unti! next Monday when the appheations will be considered. We notice by the St. John papers that the settings of the Commissioners of that city were open to the pubic.

Tue capture of a thief under very excep- tional circumstances is reported from Paris He contrived to gain admission into a set of chambers during the absence of the lawful occupant, and proceeded to lay hands on everything of value he could find, In the mid t of this operation it occurred to him that his wardrobe was in urgent need of renewal, an he, therefore, took off his clothes with a view of replacing them by others he found in the reom. Scarcely, however, had he reduced hmself to the garb of primitive man, when he heard a step outside and prompt!y hid himself under the bed. Some one entered the room, and the thief lay noisely for sev- eral minutes, At length the new-comer de- parted, and he veutured to leave his hiding- place. But, mach to his disgust, he discov- ered that the visitor had been a gentleman in his own way of business, for not only was everything in the chambers carried off, but even his own suit of clothes had disappeared! He was, therefore, compelled to await the return of the owner of the property, who, at once, handed him over to the police.
Mr. McLeray, the Minister of Marine and Fisheries has introduced into the House of Commons an Act to amend ‘‘ the Act respect- ing Certificates of Masters and Mates of Ships,” and ‘* The Seamen’s Act, 1873.” The amendment introduced by Mr. MecLelan is as follows ; ‘‘ The Act first cited in the title of this Act is further amended by adding the following provision to the seventh sectioa thereof: “‘And ifthe master of any ship, after having produced to the collector or other Officer of the Customs in Canada to whom he applies for a clearance, a certificate of com- peteacy or service required to be possessed by the tirst or only mate of such ship, and having obtained his clearance by representing that the Person possessing such certificate is eagaged as
