On Wednesday morning a lady of this city was startled while engaged in the im- portant duty of looking after the firs to find her clothing inaflame. But she didn’t shriek and rush into the frosty air. Not she. She simply drew her skirts together and quenched it before it had time to do serious damage.

Martin Dorie and Archibald McGahy were summoned before Theo. DesBrisay, Esq., to-day, at the instance of Mr. Duncan MeDonald, of Tryon Road. While Mr. McDonald was proceeding homewards, on New Year's Eve, with his family, he was

* waylaid on the Tryon Road by the two men

above named. They were full of the ‘“‘ar- dent,” and, without the least provocation, violently assaulted McDonald, his wife and son. The parties appeared for trial to-day, but the case was withdrawn by mutual con- sent—defendants paying all costs.

In the last issue of the Summerside Pro- gress there appeared an article which cast grave doubts upon the constitutionality of the Canada Temperance Act. The article drew from the Rey. N. McKay a prompt reply, which appears in yesterday's Jowr- nal. The reverend gentleman says : ‘‘The question of competency is, itself, a fair one, and it must, of course, come up in due time, But it is startling to find a news- paper gravely assuming that the Act is ultra vires, because somebody has said so, setting it aside as so much waste paper, and asking what is the use of bothering the peo- ple about it. The raising of a question is, by no means, the settling of it, and this

distinction seems, in the remarks referred

to, to be overlooked. Considering the gen- eral character of the promoters of the liquor traffic, it is to be expected that every kind of objection will be raised against the Act. Its operation will be fiercely contested at every point. It would be ridiculous to accept every point raised as necessarily valid. If the friends of the bill are to be frightened by every bugbear pre-

sented to them inthe name of the Consti-

tution, they may as well give up the contest. They are not made of that sort of material. If constitutional difficulties should arise un- der the operation of the act they will meet them when they come. If further legisla- tion, on the part either of the Dominion or local Parliament, should be found necessary they will obtain it. Of one thing there can be no doubt. The people of this county have emphatically and nobly declared their determination to stop the liquor traffic among them. The people of other counties are only awaiting the opportunity to de- clare themselves to the same effect. This tide of public feeling and resolution will make itself felt in all our legislative assemblies, and secure such legislation, if we have it not already, as will effectually sweep this ovil from the face of our fair ‘country. The liquor traffic will die hard ;
