Don’t be surprised to hear more of this in the

near future. Why?? Two airplane disasters are starting to highlight changes that have been made in the aviation industry. Basically, we hear a lot about deregulation. Usually, this means the government is getting out of their role of supervising and inspecting these industries. They then ask them (the industry) to regulate themselves. Kind of like asking a student to prepare and then write his own test in an environment of his choosing. I’m willing to bet that student will pass the

test with flying colors every time even if they don’t know the material. The Air Egypt accident and professional golfer Payne Stewart jet crash are bringing this issue back to our attention. Personally, I think the government can not shirk their role in this area. They must stand as a powerful inspector that can’t be swayed if safety is jeopardized. Otherwise, the phrase heads up will take on a whole new meaning

Boats were hunting them down. If your ship gets hit by a torpedo in the middle of the ocean, your survival rate is going to be pretty low. So what is the issue?? These people were exempted from the generous pensions and benefits given by the government to the other arms of the armed forces after the war. This is absolutely disgraceful. The government has

and people will have a completely different reaction to it when it is screamed.

With Armistice Day...

Coming up I thought I would bring up a World War II issue that still is not resolved. It involves Canadian Merchant Marines. These are the people who worked on the supply ships being sent across the ocean to supply the Allied war effort. Of all the areas of service, these people had the highest fatality rates. This had to do with the fact that U-

dragged out this issue with their legal challenges. Now, with a new Veterans Affairs Minister, George Baker, some are optimistic that they will finally get their due. I hope so. The $55 million it would cost the government is a small amount relative to the surplus and even more importantly a

small token to

those who took on the most thankless job in the Armed Services. Now, let justice be served...

The People vs. The Canadian Government

Who is in charge, the citizens of the country or the elected officials? On each election day we choose who can best represent our wishes in the federal government. We cast our ballots for someone to fight for our goals. Does this ever really happen? Whatever way we vote, will it affect the overall outcome of what is to happen in

Ottawa?

I can save you the trouble of thinking about this. It will not make a fricking differ- ence which way you vote. They either have no power or they vote along party lines. In the off chance that the leader of the ruling party is running in your district, then your vote matters. Or it would matter if they weren’t going to do

the exact same thing as the next guy. ‘As little as humanly possible.

Take Chretien for example, what has he done? Nothing. So what do we do, re-elect him. If you want to be re-elected, you are better off not doing anything of any significance. But it isn’t about the politicians and their re-election cam- paigns. It’s about us, the citizens of our great nation.

What we need is someone who understands that concept. Do what has to be done, not what you need to do to keep face.

Brian Mulroney did what had to be done. He implemented the GST into Canadian society. Something we needed in order to maintain all the services the government was supplying for us. Where would we be without the GST. What kind of eco- nomic situation would we find ourselves in? The only high note would be that we wouldn’t have to listen to Quebec separatists any more.

The economic system in Canada would be so

decrepit that only the

financially strong provinces could afford to find a new meal ticket.

Other items scratched from the federal budget would probably include medicare, and feder- ally funded universi- ties. The transporta- tiom budget wouldn’t have a dollar to its name. Probably not a good environment in which to live. In this type of atmosphere, Canada wouldn’t be expected to top the UN list of best countries to live. With all this being said you would probably find yourself in a situation like this:

available were stolen from Eastern Europe and only a handful of people here could afford them. When you look at the high- way, you realize that you are probably better off walking because the roads are so pothole infested that you would be safer driving through a mine field. After walking for a bit, you are baffled why you were walking anyway. There is nowhere for you to go ever since they closed your school and exported your job. “What will I do for money, now?” you ask yourself. You can’t

even sell your blood because you have flesh

eating bacteria consum- ing your very last ounce of pride. Finally, you realize that the real bitch of it is that a couple of pills of peni- cillin could have cured you right up.

So God bless any politician that knows what is required of him. The person that knows when it is time to take a stand. But for the most part don’t count on anybody that you have voted for to do anything. If they did they probably wouldn’t be re-elected. Five parties in Canada and they are all the same fricking thing. A wasted ballot.
