A Train's race with a Tornado.
From Mr. R. Schermererhorn, Pull- man ear conductor between this point and Kansas City, who came in yester— day, we glean the following acccount of a tornado he witnessed the evening} before last, on the Kansas Pacific road. | He said the afternoon had been in- tensely sultry and hot, and as the train howled along he noticed heavy banks of clouds gathering in the north. They grew blacker and more dense _ and | rolled up in enormous proportiors, ob—| securing the sky. It grew dark very | rapidly, while along the edges of the. cloud the lightning played its fantastic | dance. The eloud bung lower and lower until it seemed to almost touch the ground.
Suddenly a murmer, which increased into a roar,was heard,and at a distance over the prairie could be seen the| destroyer at work. Mr. Schermerhorn | says thatit was nota cyclone, and it was not funnel—shaped, but he says it sucked up everytiing in its path as if they were feathers. It was moving south and toward the smali town of Victoria, which place the train was also approacning. But the wings of the ternade were so strong that they impeded the progress of the train which to keep from being blown of the track, was atlast compelled to come to a stand-still in the shelter ofa blaff. It was now about 630 o'clock and quite dark. They could see the town in the distance and the monster swooping down upon it. It struck, and in the dim light the houses seemed to collapse. It then grew darker, and they could see no more, but the terrible roaring, grow- ing tainter and fainter, told that the tornado was passing south.
As the wind subsided the rain started, and upon approaching the town it was signalled to stop by the station agent, who said the sterm had struck them and had done fearful damage, but how much he could not tell. The train immediately started again, and further
articulara have not been learned. Mr, Behermerheah describes the storm as a grand sight.—Cheyenne Leader, June 24.

Herena, Mont., Jury 6.—News has been received from the North that troops under Col. Ilges of Fort As- siniboine, out en a scout to drive back | the British Crees, met the enemy this side of the line on Tuesday, and were defeated by the Indians, who greatly out-pumbered the troops. No particu- lars of the engagement have been learned, but the report is that a courier was sentin hasteto Fort Assiniboine for reinforcements, The report of Iiges’ repulse is doubted here, as heis an officer who,even with a small command would make a determined stand.
