THe corner-stone of the Oddfellows’ new Hall, at St. John, N. B., was laid this afternoon with imposing ceremonies. Sev- eral members of the order in this City left yesterday morning to take part in the pro- ceedings.
We are pleased to note the arrival of the steamer Gulnare at Glasgow, after a pass- age of twelve days. The chief officers of this boat being young men belonging to this Province, and on their first trip, the passage just made betokens, we hope, their ruture prosperity.
Two young men were out fishing the other day, and on returning were going past a farm house and felt hungry. They yelled to the farmer’s daughters : ‘‘Girls, have you any buttermilk ?’, The reply was gently wafted back to their ears: ‘‘Yes; but we keep it for our own calves.”
Soms mischievous person applied a match to a bundle of inflammable matter that was floating about the harbor yesterday evening. Late last night it was seen blazing largely at the Three Tides, and we are informed that a {number of curious sailors pulled a boat from this City to the Three Tides to ascertain the cause of the blaze.
WE regret to learn that a lad in the em- loy of Jeremiah Simpson, Esq., Hope iver, met with a very serious accident on
Friday last. He was engaged in attending the carding mill when his hand got caught in the , tearing the flesh from the hand and arm yery badly. It is thought it will be necessaly to amputate the arm to save the boy’s life. — Patriot.

Sirk,—The other day I visited the Town Hall for the purpose of buying butter. But, lo, and behold, the butter in the baskets had been under the heating process so long, that the prints got very much attached to one an- other, and were with difficulty separated, and only ina disfigured state! I realy felt sorry for those good country housekeepers (whomust have taken great pains to get up a good looking print of butter) when their baskets were stripped, the prints were so soft that it was
butter from one basket to another. This state of things causes a good deal of grumbling amongst the women. And itis not much won- der. If the citizens tax country produce that is exposed for sale, they should, in return, give the vendors fair play. Now, we know that the Market Hall is no place for butter or anything else that will spoil with the heat ; and, I think, it is asking the country people to put up with greater inconvenience than we would like to suffer ourselves. Besides all this, butter melted in the market cannot be so good to the buyer,as whenit can be bought cool, and no doubt but what it iujures the sale to a certain extent. The very name of making our only Hall a butter market seems to me to be progress on the lobster fashion.
I would then make a suggestion, and that would be to raise the Market House, Tower, big Denald and all, at least four or five feet, and build in a good brick wall underneath; then put in good large wincows, and clear the basement out, and make either a butter mar- ket of it, or a meat market. It would bea cool place in summer, and comfortable in win- ter. A floor could be laid over the whole of it, and the walls and ceilings plastered. Then, with easy flights of stairs, it would be a right, good appartment, Some may object to climb- ing up high steps to weigh meat, but that is no objection, as the present accomodations for weighing are faulty in the extreme. Think, Sir, of afarmer having meat for sale, having to shoulder a quarter of an ox, and to carry it first in threugh gthrongs of people, jostling this lady and that lady, until they are pretty well greased over, then sousing it down upon a scales almost level with the floor, then pick- {ing it up again, and wending his way out again, as he came in, with his coat more like a tallow candle than anything else, when the whole thing could be avoided by having a scales outside of tke building, similarly ar renged to a hay scales, with the beam inside. This would savea great dealj of worrying and dragging, and would meet the objection against high steps.
