‘Tue Fisneries.—During the past week a number of American fishermen have arrived in port. From what we ¢an learn the large American fishing fleet have not been 80 successful as during the past few years. A few of the vessels have taken a fair catch, but the majority of them have not had an average take. Vessels from the Labrador reports fishery there exceedingly good. We also hear good reports from some parts of Newfoundland. The fishery around the shores of Cape Breton is below the average.— North Sydney Herald,

PRESENTATION TO Siz Joun.—A very pleas~ ing event took place at the U. E. Club, in the presentatoin of the beautiful cane voted tohima few days ago by the-people of Maidstone, County Essex. It will be re- member that Mr. McGregor, M. P., chal- lenged the contest between Sir John and Mr. Mackenzie, and that Sir John headed the poll by a majority of 900 votes. The deputation which made the presentation consisted of Mr. J. C. Patterson, M. P. P., Mr. John McHugh, of Maidstone, Major J. Lewis, of the Essex Times, Mr. Solomon White, and Messrs. Joseph A. and Achille A. Quiellette. Haying dined with Sir John, they proceeded to the reading room of the club, where speeches were made by most of the members of the deputation, and Sir John replied at some length.— Toronto Mail.

IMPROVEMENT OF GeoRGETOWN.—A cCor~ respondent of the Advertiser proposes that the howling wilderness around Georgetown —Georgétown Common-—-shall be turned into fruitful gardens. ‘A consummation devoutely to be wished!’ The correspon- dent says ‘ifthe Common comes into the hands of a properly constituted authority is Georgetown, which I ardently hope it s00n may, it could be rented out in the following manner: Say there are 40) acres, divided into eight acre lots, with the neces~ sary reservation for roads—say 16 acres— there would then be 48 Lots, with a fixed rental for ten years, the rent varying ac. cording to the eligibility and situation of the Lot. When a sufficient number of applicants would offer, the Lots to be put Up to public competition, the competitor offering the highest bonus for the possess
sion of any Lot, should become the lessee, in addition to the upset rent of each Lot, the occupant of the lot to have it free for three years, in consideration of the clearing and fencing, then to be subject to the an- nual rent fixed on each Lot for seven years. Besides, the bonus accrueing from the sale of the lots, if allcould be let in this way, would give Georgetown a revenue of over $500 for local improvement, which, if judiciously and economically expended, would be of marked benefit to our town; besides the pleasure, beauty and benefit of highly-cultivated suburbs, instead of the howling wilderness that wa now behold.” We hope to see this plan vigorously disouss- ed in the columns of the Advertiser.

Acquatic.—The New York Clipper in its account ofthe recent race, says the time made by the Halifax crew in the race with the Paris crew—I7;58—has never been eqalled, and it considers that here is not a crew that can beat them. It says the Halifax men do not rowas clean a stroke as tha Eoglishmen, but are superior oarsmen. It justifies the umpire,under the laws of boating for giving the Englishmen first money, but it censures the latler for their conduct in forcing the foul that took place.

The stock used in the construction of the work will be of the best imported, viz :— Amertcan Hickery, Oak, Ash, Elm, Bass, Whitewood, etc., etc. The iron will be of the best English refined; and Norway and Swedish iron will be used for the parts re quiring extra strength and durability.
Also, in connection with the said branch is a PAIN'TSHOP, which is conducted by a first-class carriage-painter, who will attend to the painting of new and second-hand work for the public.
