Jos Bevas appeared before R. R. Fitz-

gerald, Esq., J. P. forthis Province, to answer charges of selling liquor without license on the 7th and on the 28th of September fast. The charges were fully proven, and he was fined $20 for each offence. Bevan was a week ago tinued $40 for similar offences.

Mr. Fraxk HUvrst, the gentlemanly agent who visited this city with the Academy of Music Company in July, arrived last evening. He announces that Grace Egerton, the cele- brated actress, will visit this city next week and give two entertainments— Monday and Wednesday evenings. See advertisement.

W. D. Stewart sold by auction at Monta- gue Bridge yesterday lots on the estate of Pierce Gaul, Esq., to the value of between $5,000 and $6,000, ‘The sale is reported as an excellent one—some of the land realizing about $1)0anacrs. Residents of the ne'gh- horhood; with Gwen Connolly, Esq., of this city, were the principal purchasers.

Mason Poitarn’s battery of Artillery was yesterday inspected by Colonel J. H. Gray, D. A. G., at Victoria Park. The members of the Company appeared in their new uniform and went through theie varions exercises with unusual precision. At the close of the inspection, Col. Grey made a lengthy speech, in which he complimented the men of Major Pollard'’s Company on their fine, soldier-like appearance and the esprit de corps evidently existing among them.

SMALi-pox IN MonTREAL. — Few people have any idexof the -extent of small-pox in the city of Montreal. The Star, speaking of a late report, says: - ‘‘ Of these districts the second alone claims 50 per cent. of the total mortality of the nine, 607 deaths having oc- curred in it, and considerably more (360) than half of these deaths having been due to small- pox. The cighth district comes next in order, with 212 deaths, of which 127 were from amall-pox. in fine, out ef the whole 1,300 deaths, rightly speaking, 900 were caused by small-pox and diptheria, diseases which are to be stamped out by proper sanitary pre- cautions,”

A numser ef -gentlemen met at the ‘*Ran- kin House” last evening for the purpose of organizing a Vurling Club. The meeting was cailed to order, and after disoussing the merits of the “‘roarin’” game, the Club was duly or- ganized and called the ‘Caledonia Curling Club of Charlottetown.” The © following officers were elected:—

Tus Charlottetown Engiaeer Co., uader command of Major Dogherty, was on Monday inspected in the Drill Shed by Lieut. Colonel John Hamilton Gray, Deputy Adjutant Gen- eral. This was the first inspection of the company in their new regimentals, and they presented an excellent front, a fact of which they were reminded and complimented on by Col. Gray. Said he “I envy Major Dogherty his position, and were la iew years younger nothing would afford me greater pleasure than to command so fine a body of men.” The Patriot says:—‘‘He also mentioned that a few years previously the captain of the com- pany had been sent to England to take part im the match at \Vimbledon, and he congratulated

them on the fact that one of themselves had |

earned a similar right. The men express themselves very much pleased with the kind words of encouragement and the generous praise given them by the Adjutant General.”
