I think that I have stated the case ma simple manner. ‘I look at the question from different points. It is not my intention to call forth a war-excitement in the United States. It is my earnest Wish to allay it; but at the some time, it is my duty to warn my countrymen of their dangerous position—render- ed more dangerous by their own in- judtcious, not to say wicked, threats towards a powerful-nation, like Great Britain.

I have brought into one view the opinions of the principal Britishjour- nals on the Oregon question, and other matters. These opinions are valuabie, as showing the sentiments of Englishmen. They are valuable, as they exercise an inﬂuence over, not only the people, but over British statesmen. Who can doubt, when the ofiicial organ ofGoVernment says that Mr. Polk will insisthin his Mes- sage, upon the whole of the Oregon, and the ofﬁcial organ here. replies:— “If we could believe that so mon- strous a proposition was likely to be made by the American government, we should be disposed to regard it, as we hope it would be treated, as a virtual declaration of war against this country?" Who can doubt the influ- ence of such language? language not made use of‘ without deep re- ﬂection.
