A FATAL ACCIDENT occurred at Trois Pis- toles, a few days ago, under the following circumstances. A laborer named Napoleon Beaulieu was working at the tower of a church, when a scaffolding gave way, and he was pre- cipitated to the ground below, a distance of forty feet. The unfortunate man expired a few hours later, after enduring atrocious sufferings, and leaving a wife and nine chil- dren in indigent circumstances,

Tue keeper of the Alms house at Buffalo, N. Y., has sent in his annaul report to the Supervisors. The total number of persons cared for during the year was 2,357, of whom 116 are charged with being Canadians, the bulk being from Ontario, but one each being from New Branswick and Nova Scotia. _Ire- Jand and Germany furnished about half of the inmates, England and Canada an equal num- ber, while only 27 Scotchmen figure on the record.

Asnore Axpd ABANDONED.—A despatch of the 19th, from Savannah, reports that the Barque “John Lefargey,” Nicholson, from Pensacola for Buenos Ayres, with a cargo of lumber, went ashore on the shoals op the south end of Tybee lighthouse. The “Le furgey” became water-logged when three days out from Pensacola, and was endeavoring to reach this port when she went ashore. | She is poanding heavily and it is expected will go to pieces rapidly,

Domisick Buorte, of Rustico, an honest. in- dustrious trader, who is doing all he can, in an honorable wav, to support a wife and fam- ily of eight children, had the misfortune, a week since, t» have his purse, contaming about $17.00 in cash, lost or stolen from his residence. This to some may appear a small sum; but to one who has to earn, with hard work, every dollar he owns, it isa loss which he must feel, more especially as it was his savings, wherewith to procure winter provi- sions for his weak and helpless children. Mr. Bucte is a sober, industrious man, and we sympathise with him. We trust, however, that, if the money was stolen, sooner or later restitution will be made; and. if lost, it is to be hoped some one wiil find it, who will re- store it to the owner at his residence in Rustico,

—_— —<———-— Epwarp Ketty. Fse., of Lake Verd, has completed a beautiful residence on the corner of Prince and Sydney Streets, opposite the Methodist Chorch. The main building 1s thirty-four by thirty seven feet. Attached to it is a kitchen two stories high, twenty-one by seventeen feet. The main building is two stori-s high with mansard roof, is very neatly proportioned, and well finished. It contains in all fourteen spacious rooms, besides five large well arranged halls. The interior tinish of the house from attic to cellar 1s superior in every respect. ‘The kitchen is fitted with a pump and other conveniences. The yard is large and the outbuildings—coach-house, stable, shed, pump-house, etc., well arranged. Altogether the premises are well edapted for a gentleman's residence, They are highly creditable to the owner, Mr. Kelly, and the Wuilder, We learn that they are to be let, wall wit & reatly for ottiypation this witk.

The grounds in front of his residence were illuminated with Chinese lanterns, and the exterior of the house, facing the street, tastefully decorated.

snail Barry, of Bradford, has succeeded Marwood as public hangman. Barry, who was for some years in the county constabulary, and after- wards in the borough police force, is now em- ployed by Mr. Wilson, bootmaker, of Brad- ford. He is nota manof very tall, stalwart frame, and does not appear very strong. He is described as a sober, industrious man of quiet manner. When he went from Bradford to apply for the office in London, be took a sil rope which he had specially plaited for him, and which was fitted with a special loop made by alocal firm of ironmongers. With this rope he said he could cause death quicker than Marwood did. —_——

The New York Tribune says stock trans- actions on the 19th were larger than for any day for some time, and iu the morning the activity was extraordinary. Some large oper- ators in stock expressed great confidence that for the present the worst had been passed. Gould said he had no fears of a panic, because low prices were constantly attracting new buyers, who took stocks out of the street. The Sun says it was reported on the 19th that Geovld, Vanderbilt, Sage and Field have been consulting concerning concerted support of the market. Gould said he proposed to cons tinue time, money and energies to his own stocks; he knew what they were worth and was satisfied with them.

A puBLic temperance meetieg was held in the Division Room, Georgetown on Saturday last. William Sanderson, Esq., occupied the chair. The Grand Scribe and P. W. Patri- arch Smith, of Charlottetown, addressed the meeting, as did also John Weatherbie, Esq., of Georgetown. The addresses were very practical ones, showing that the speakers had the temperance cause really at heart. The Chairman, who by the way has been a member of the Order, for more‘than thirty-five years, read a brief but excellent article from the pen of P. M. W. Patriarch Kansom, giving @ clear and minute insight into the early history of that Grand Old Order. At the close of the public meeting, ** Diamond of the Desert” was opened in due form, and after an initiation, election, and iastallation of officers, election of representatives to Grand Division, and other necessary business, it adjourned in Love, Purity and Fidelity, This Division wi'l re- sume its regular weekly meetings every Mon- evenings.
