penditure of the public monies thereon, and to make an order to that effect, which, when noti- fied to the Commissioner of the District, shall relieve him from any further or future authority or responsibility in respect of, or relation to any such part, piece or pieces of Highway, Bridge, Wharf, or Public Works referred to in any such order, until such order shall be re- scinded by the Board, in which case the super- vision of such part, piece or pieces of Highway, Bridge, Wharf, or Public Work in question, shall be resumed by the Commissioner of the District as before.

X. When any such order shall be made, as in the last preceding section mentioned, the occupiers of the farms fronting on the piece or pieces of Highway in quest-ion, shall be liable to perform their Statute Labor, under the di- rection of, or pay commutation money therefor, to the Board of Works, or their Superintendent, Surveyor, or other person appointed by the Board for that purpose, who shall have the like powers with regard to enforcing performance of such Statute Labor, or recovering penalties for the non-performance thereof, or recovering the commutation money therefor, as is now possessed by the various Commissioners of High- ways or Overseers. '

XI. The law with respect to the performance of Statute Labor, generally, now in force, shall not be affected by this Act, except that it shall be lawful for the Board of Works, with respect to any person or persons liable to perform Statute Labor, on any piece of Highway taken under the exclusive management of the Board, from time to time, to alter and vary the period or periods of the year by law now ordained for the performance thereof; and such altera- tion shall be notified to the parties liable to perform Statute Labor as aforesaid.

XII. All grants or sums of money exceeding fifty pounds, appropriated by the Legislature, to be expended on any particular Bridge, Wharf or Highway in this Island, whether in Road Scales or otherwise, shall be laid out and applied‘by the County Superintendent or Sur- veyor, acting under the orders of the Board of Works, and receiving instructions from the Board, and any lesser sums by the Commis- sioner for the district under the like order.

XIII. Each Superintendent or Surveyor of Public Works to be appointed under this Act, shall be subject to the orders and directions of

the Board of Works, be charged within his county with the general supervision and control of all repairs, alterations and improvements to all public buildings, and with the carrying on any public works and erecting any public build- ings, and with the repairs, alterations and improvements to be made to, or in the same ; and it shall - further be his duty, generally, to oversee and manage such al- terations and repairs in such public Roads, Bridges and Wharves, as may be com- mitted to his charge by the Board of Works, to assist and supply the Board with all plans, estimates and specifications which the Board may require of him of buildings or other public works, and such repairs or alterations required therein, to inspect and superintend such build- ings or alterations or repairs, in or to the same, as he may be required to do by the Board, and to grant, when required, such certificates re- specting the manner in which any building or public works, or alterations or repairs thereto, or therein, or on, or respecting the Public Highways which may have been constructed or effected, as the circumstances of the case may require, and shall have the general care and charge of all such materials, tools, machines, implements, and other things as may be pro- vided for, or belong to any such buildings, al- terations or repairs.

XIV. The sub-inspection or superintendence of any Buildings, Highways, or other Public \Vorks in the course of construction, repair or alteration, shall, as much as possible, be avoid- ed; but, nevertheless, if the Board of Works shall in any case find it absolutely necessary, temporarily to employ a local Inspector in con- nection with the same, it shall be lawful for them to appoint such Inspector, and allow him such remuneration as they shall deem proper, provided such remuneration shall be subject to the approval of the Administrator of the Gov- ernment, for the time being, in Council, and may be altered or reduced by him in Council.

XV. The account of all expenditures made, and expenses incurred by the Board under this Act, shall be kept by the Secretary ; and the amount of money required to liquidate the same, shall be paid on being submitted to the Ad- ministrator of the Government in Council, from time to time, by Warrant or Warrants - drawn on the Treasurer of this Island, in the usual manner ; and all such accounts shall be annu- ally laid before the Legislature, being first

audited with the other Public Accounts.
