A Stand Off.

A couple of practical jokers, living ata big up-town hotel, bought a terra- pin, while walking through the market the other day, and slipped itin the bed of a fresh arrival who had just register- ed.

They watched that night until -they saw the new comer retire to bed. In about ten minutes a white-robed figure began shouting down the elevator shaft for the landlord.

When the crowd got up stairs, the victim conducted the landlord to the bed and turned down the clothes.

“Mr. Housekeeper,” said the stranger solemaly, pointing to the terrapin, “I amfrom New Jersey, and I cun stand most anything, but either that bug or me has got to take another room.” —San Francisco Post.

CURRENT NOTES.

Prince George of Wales is about to receive a step of promotion in the naval service,and wili pass from the midship- man’s list to the rank of sub-lieutenant in the navy. This willgive him a not unwelcome increase of pay from the munificent rate of ls. 3d. to 5s.a day. At the close of his service in the Cenada he will probably be advanced to the lieutenant’s list.

A beautiful album presented to the Geographical Society of Quebec by His Highness Prince Roland Bonaparte has Just been received from Paris. It con- tains 35 finely executed photographs representing the different types of the Omaha red-skins. The prince had the pictures taken for his own private col- lection from individuals of the tribe re- cently sojourning at the Jardine d’Ac- climation, Paris.

The Timesa few months ago, com- menting on what Goldwin Smith said to an American newspaper reporter, assert- ed that the wealth of the millionaires of the Republic was largely imaginary. The proof of the assertion has not long been wanting. Villard, Keene and others, who had been known as mil- lionaires, have gone under, and the Boston Herald is authority for the statement that the great Jay Gould has lost twenty-five million dollars by the shrinkage in stocks.

Joseph Howe in 1854, when Kilman and Wilkins were opposed to his idea of rapid railway building, said;

“Does my friend, Mr. Kilman, mean to say that,while men of other countries are going over the country at the rate of 30 miles an hour, that Nova Scotians must be content with three; that, while the people of Maine, whose sod is more sterile than ours, and people no_ better off, are to go. where they list, with a steam engine before. them, Nova Sco- tians are to be satisfied with going over the country at a snail’s pace.”

In this debate Howe predicted for Kilam’s beaetit that before twelve years the railway would stretch to Yarmouth. The orator was out by fifteen years or so, a8 he was when he expected to go to (Juebee by railas early as 1860. He Was hearer right when he startled the people of Windsor, in 1851, by telling them that many in the room would live “to hear the whistle of the steam engine in the passes of the Rocky Mountains.”
