Candidate Speeches

On Tuesday, March 19 at 12:30, the candidate speeches were held in the Pit. Despite the fact that there was a poor turn out of students and not all the candidates were present to deliver their speeches, there was still a show of interest from the audience.

Each of the current student union executives gave an address on what they accomplished in the past year, with the candidate speeches following directly after. Chris Grey, already acclaimed for the position of Vice President External, told the students what he is expecting to accomplish as VPE,

The candidates running for Vice President Internal are Wendy Venema, who was on the Board of Governors this year, and Tara Inman, who is rerunning for VPI this year. Both mentioned their desire to improve the communication on campus between the students and the Student Union. The position with the most competition is Vice President of Operations. Finley Martin, currently in office, is striving for a third consecutive year as VPO,

with new-comers Brent Byrnes and Jonathon Sellers contesting this posi- tion. Byrnes maintains that it is time for a fresh perspective in the entertain- ment department of the university. Sellers, unfortunately, did not attend the speeches to voice his objectives.

available at the speeches, it was diffi- cult to hear them.

The president for next year, Chris Burns -- who was also acclaimed -- was away on a trip, and conse- quently could not attend the speeches.

After the speeches, the students were given a chance to ask the candi- dates questions. The student concerns that were addressed focused mainly on the events from the past year. All the candidates were asked to state their opinions on CIMN, the campus radio station, and on CFS (Canadian Federa- tion of Students).

Their opinions of CIMN varied. Martin, Byrnes, Venema, and Inman all expressed that the radio station should be given a chance to go FM. Both the VPFs remained in neutral territory, and Grey -- who voiced his opinion from the crowd rather than sitting with the other candidates, was strongly opposed.

The candidates’ positions on CFS were more unified. All the candidates were in favour of leaving the lobbyist group, except for the VPFs, who once again chose to remain neutral until they knew more about the organization.

Time ran out for the speeches and there were many students who still wanted to ask the candidates questions. Because of this time shortage and because the president was not available for questions, Student Union was considering hosting another candidate debate.

Local Model Receives Recognition

Congratulations to Kerry McKittrick of Charlottetown, who recently won three awards at the Canadian Model and Talent Convention in Toronto. She won the award for Best Smile and came second and third in Photography and Cover Girl, respectively. This was a prestigious competition where talent agencies from around the world watched mod- els from across Canada compete for various awards. Miss McKittrick has already recieved call backs from to New York, Taiwan-Taipei, and Aus-

tralia. An agency in Los Angeles also wants her for a magazine shoot for a year. Miss McKittrick is considering the offer. Congratulations Kerry,
