Low Wages for Women.

Miss Jennie Collins, says the Boston Advertiser, has prepaired the thirteenth annual report of her good work at Beffin’s Bower, and the document will be found interesting by all friends of the r working girls, among whom Miss Collins has laboured faithfully so long. She discusses the question of low wages at length, of the practical result of which she says:—‘“It has been the causes of the early death of some of the purest and most beautiful young women. In the course of the last year, five in whom I was particularly in- terested died of consumption, and one committed suicide by drowning—all under 22 years of age. They could earn from three to four dollars per week. It would be. impossible for them to get 21 of the plainest meals for less than three dollars; consequent-— ly they had to resort to one meal or a meal and a half aday.” The report speaks of an improved condition of saleswomen, but, nevertheless, Miss Collins says much abuse 1s_ still prac- tised :-—‘‘One elass of storekeepers pay $3 per week ; the work begins at half— past sevenin the morning; they allow one half-hour for dinner, half-hour for supper ; than the girls are required to

Butter makers are frequently troub- led by the apper.rance of white specks in the butter, vyhich are caused by too rapid souring ot the milk or by keeping the eream ir, too warm a place. Some- times in the gathered cresm system they are caused by the cresum churning whilh en route to the creamery, When the cream is churned on the farm it should be stirred every day as fresh cream is addedioit. It it has been bauled to the creamery it should be thoroughly strained before being put isto the cream vat. When fresh cream containing more or less mi)k is rnixed
